avo345 Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 So, as I mentioned, $1000 is a rough limit, +/- a couple hundred, BUT this must include literally everything. What do I mean by that? I mean that, in addition to the core components, I need a monitor, keyboard, maybe a sound card, and a copy of Windows. Suggestions are welcome. In a little bit, I can post what I've kind of got in mind right now, but I'd like to see what people come up with, first! I would like to mention that I'm leaning toward AMD processors because I feel it's got bang for the buck still, but if someone can come up with a solid argument for Intel at this price point, I'd gladly listen. Thanks, Avo

avo345 Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Two questions 1. Are you in the US? 2. Are you near a microcenter? I am in the US. I am sort of near a Microcenter - I'd say that if the price difference on a component was $50 cheaper than online, I'd drive it, but it's about 100 miles away. It would become more likely if there were several parts to pick up there, obviously.

Some intriguing choices I hadn't thought about there, though. I think for the case I'd go with the HAF 912 - a little more expensive, but it gives me more confidence for any future changes. Meanwhile, I'm wondering about the 6850. It seems quite a few people feel that the nVidia GTX460 gives better performance for the money at this time - thoughts? Thanks again ^^

MercuryDoun Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 AMD 6850 beats the 1gb GTX-460 in pretty much every game/benchmark and AMD hasnt even have time to really get to optimizing the drivers for the 6xxx series yet, where as the 460 has much more finely tuned drivers. Where you will likely see a difference is crossfire/SLI battle, As of right now the 460 has insanely good SLI scaling so if the addition of an addition graphics card is in your future then maybe the 460 is for you. But you will then likely require a stonger Power supply. Here is the big kick in the nutz though. none of AMD's current chipsets offically support SLI... so you likely will not be able to use SLI without using hacked bios or maybe you get lucky and it works. Honestly i think the better bet is the 6850 or perhaps its bigger brother the 6870. Both are great cards and beat the 460 in 90% of games/benchmarks and will give the guaranteed crossfire support in the future. Ultimately personal preference would lead me to take up an AMD 6850 or 6870. But im slightly Bias towards AMD/ATI due to my past with them. I really have nothing against nVidia but ive pretty much always used ATI and i really have never been let down.
MercuryDoun Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Here is an interesting Combo for you to consider! CM Haf-912 with 750w CM PSU 4x6+2 PCI-E connectors for all your crossfire/SLI desires.

avo345 Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Damn, always forget that I do need an OS but I'll buy that through my medical school tech department, since I get ridiculous discounts. I'm on my iPhone right now, so I'll respond to the other posts when I have a real keyboard
