Hi, im looking for a better cooling solution as to my stock cooling on my athlon x4 620 (upgrading to phenom 965 :) ). So im looking for some recommendations. Ive looked at two options priced around £35, so wondered if anyone could recommend either Arctic Cooling Freezer Xtreme Rev. 2 or coolermaster v8. Or if there is a better option for this price please share. Thankyou in advance

Thanks for the reply DRdeath. Looking at that chart there is clearly a big difference when stressed between the v8 and the noctua NH-D14, but like you said there is a little difference in the price too. At one point i did consider the v10 which is one behind the noctua, but it was the price that put me off a little, i am willing to stretch that far but only if i will be getting that much more out of my cooler. Im also curious to find out how the cooling performance will differ on a amd platform as joel.monteiro mentioned.

Cooler Master RR-B10-212P-G1 Hyper 212 Plus

$29.38 at Amazon. Keeps my Phenom x3 720 BE at 51C with fan at full speed on max load. It's a bit tall, so make sure your case is wide enough.

The only other one I've used for my AMD Phenom's is the CNPS 9700 NT, which isn't very tall, slightly more expensive, but keeps the CPU cooler than the Hyper 212+ by a small margin.

Joel made a good point. I put the i7 to show the major differences since they run hotter. This is where some heatsinks shine. On AMD's, the disparity will be less due to lower heat....

Does this mean that the benchmarks may change due to the lower heat? Because on the benchmarking table some have a lower idle temp. to the noctua meaning it may perform differently due to the different circumstances?

They are not benchmarks, they are simply temp readings The spreads between the heatsinks will be closer and not as far apart. Better heatsinks perform much better under more heat so the temp differences get a little more of a spread....... When the general temps/voltage are lower or the CPU is at idle, you will see somewhat closer temps. This does not mean the lesser heatsinks are as good as the better one... I may have confused you on this...Sorry

Benchmarks will not change under more heat at the same frequencies as long as the system is stable........

If you're looking to stick with a budget cooler I agree with El capitan, the hyper 212+ is a nice budget hsf with the choice to add a second fan to it(I have one on a phenom x2 555 unlocked to a quad@stock and it runs pretty cool). I also have a xigmatek dark Knight s-1283 on my 965, but if I were to buy another cooler for that I'd spend an extra couple bucks and pick up a noctua unit or a corsair h50.
