Hi guys,

I joined the forums about a month ago and since then ive gotten myself some decent cooling, a noctua nh d-14 (heck of an installation). So now I've started to tinker around with OCing and trying to get 4ghz or higher but I keep getting the BSOD or my screen just blacks out (i don't know which is worse)...

My gear is:

++ Intel Core i7-930 2.80Ghz

++ Noctua NH D-14

++ Asus Rampage II Gene

++ Patriot Gamer 6GB Kit DDR3 1600

++ Gigabyte 1GB ATI Radeon HD 5850

++ Seasonic X-750 Gold PSU

++ Antec 900 + Seagate 1.5TB HDD + Pioneer DVDRW

++ Logitech G110 + G35 + G9x + Razer Vespula

Im abit of a noob at OCing so please be gentle. My current BIOS settings are:

Asus Rampage II Gene

Bios Version - 1033

Tuning Mode - Extreme OC

AI Overclock Tuner - Manual

OC From CPU Level Up - Disabled

OC From Memory Level Up - Auto

When running Prime95 my core temps are hitting 84c but then again I just installed the Noctua which might mean I have to break it in abit...

It blacks out after about 10mins.

Any input guys?

Did I install the noctua wrong to get those temps?not enough thermal paste? (I used the amount the instruction said which was 4-5mm diameter blob)

Are any of the values wrong?

If I continue raising my voltage, wont it get too hot?

Any help would be so awesome! (DrDeath if you're around help me! T.T I know you have better cooling but I thought I could at least do 4.2ghz)

Thanks all!

From what I can see, is your dram volts correct? Should it not be 1.65v? Check your specs.

I have been playing with my 930 too for the last couple of weeks. I got about 85c too with 4.2. I use the H50.

I am now running at 4.0 @ 1.2625v. Temps around 80c@ max load. Ram at 2000 @ 1.66v

Good luck

CPU Spread Spectrum - Auto

PCIE Spectrum - Auto

Disable these.

Enable load line calibration and you will most likely need more voltage on CPU. Try 1.35V- 1.375V.

Use 21x as multi.

Many thanks Doc!

I will try those values tonight. Do you think I should increase DRAM to 1.65?

And what do you feel the max temps for i7-930s are?is going over 80 already too far?

If you keep you memory at around 1600MHz which I would do, no. Once you find a good overclock you play around with different multi's and your memory divide and the raise memory voltage if necessary.

80 i pushing it, personally i wont let mine get over 70, but i believe 75 is considered ok, but not for extended periods of time.

80 is not pushing it OP. Don't be afraid to go 85 stress testing. Normal conditions will yield mid 60's max and your golden.

Here is my max stable OC. I backed it down to 4.3Ghz at 1.375V....

Nice!

I'm currently stable at 4.2Ghz with 1.3625V and my temps are at around 76-78c at 100% load. Had to reconfigure a fan to feed the noctua air from the side of my casing.

What are you timings Doc? 21 x 205?

Im happy with leaving mine on 4.2Ghz but I was wondering, what program should I use to make sure its 100% stable?

Ive used Prime95 for about 30 mins with no glitches and but when I ran Intel Burn Test on maximum, windows crashed after about 20 minutes.

Any suggestions?

All recommended changes are in bold and larger font. You may need to bump the southbridge voltages a little (ICH) but for now leave them at stock settings. Disable TM (Intel Thermal Management/Monitoring) is an absolute must - otherwise the cpu and board will start throttling or kicking off once you exceed 67.9C temperature on the cpu die.

Once you get a stable overclock, it's worth trying to incorporate some of the energy and heat saving features of the Intel Socket 1366 processors, such as C1E Support, Intel Speed Step and C-State Technology. Also, once you're stable you can try lowering your cpu voltage. 1.35 vcore should get you at a good starting point though. All the settings below should yield you 4.0 to 4.2Ghz stable, after that it will be a heat issue.

Tuning Mode - Extreme OC

AI Overclock Tuner - Manual

OC From CPU Level Up - Disabled

OC From Memory Level Up - Disabled

CPU Ratio Settings - 21

CPU Turbo Power Limit - Disabled

Ratio Status: (Min:12, Max:21)

CPU Ratio Setting - 21

C1E Support - Disabled

Hardware Prefetcher - Enabled

Adjacent Cache Line Prefetcher - Enabled

Intel Virtualization Tech - Enabled

CPU TM Function - Disabled

Execute Disabled Bit - Enabled

Intel HT Technology - Enabled

Active Processor Cores - All

A20M - Disabled

Intel Speedstep Tech - Disabled

Intel C-STATE Tech - Disabled

BCLK Frequency - 200

PCIE Fequency - 100

DRAM Frequency - Manual - you will have six base memory frequencies to play with - select the divider that yields a dram frequency at or near DDR3 1600 speeds (the available dividers are; DD3 800, DDR3 1066, DDR3 1333, DDR3 1600, DDR3 1866, DDR3 2133)

UCLK Frequency - Auto

QPI Link Data Rate - Auto

Dram Timing Control: Manual

Dram CAS Latency - 9

Dram RAS to CAS Delay - 9

Dram RAS Pretime - 9

Dram RAS ACT Time - 24

All other advanced Dram timings should be left on Auto

CPU Load-Line Calibration - Enabled

CPU Differential Amplitude - Auto

NB OCP - Enabled

DRAM OCP - Enabled

Extreme OV - Disabled

CPU Voltage Control - Absolute VID

CPU Voltage - 1.3500

CPU PLL Voltage - 1.8600

QPI-Dram Voltage - 1.3000

IOH Voltage - 1.2500

IOH PCIE Voltage - 1.6000

ICH Voltage- 1.11341

ICH PCIE voltage - 1.51106

DRAM Bus Voltage - 1.6400

Debug Mode - String

Keyboard TweakIt Control - Disabled

CPU Spread Spectrum - Disabled

PCIE Spectrum - Disabled

CPU Clock Skew - Auto

IOH Clock Skew - Auto

Disable turbo!

Tuning mode take off extreme and put on standard. Use 1600Mhz on ram and maybe a slight bump in CPu voltage. Don't use Intelburn. It is a wek stress test. Use the big boy tool, LinX.

Doc I changed my BIOS settings to as above and it seems stable enough...

Thing is, why does LinX only detect 4gb of my RAM when I actually have 6?

Have i accidently nudged one stick of RAM off or is it a software issue?

I use intel burn test all the time for quick overclocking checks to see if I have a half stable system before I bump up my overclocks. I also use it when I am lowering my voltage to its minimum for my overclock to see how far I can go down and be decently stable.
