HoLoDreaM Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 So I've had a 2x1GB DDR400 kit on my computer that runs 2.5-3-3-6, its the G-Skill 2GBNS kit, I had some old 2x512mb DDR400 ram chips laying around that run 2-3-3-6 that is the G-Skill 1GBZX kit. I cannot get all 4 chips to boot up together. Both kits are good as they boot individually. I've tried lowering the clock speeds on my rig to stock, tried forcing the mobo to use the slowest of the RAM timings, even on stock speeds, and such. I've tried Auto everything. I just cannot get it to work. Specs in my sig of mobo. What could I do to get these 4 sticks to boot me up to 3GB? Thanks EDIT: I posted the original thread with the 2x1GB, now I'm on the 2x512MB kit. In CPU-Z the timings are identical (since I have it set to CL2.5 on the BIOS in case the ZX kit can't do CL2) Still won't boot together. Both advertise 2.6v-2.7v and I'm running 2.7v

davidst Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 Interesting. Can you get just one of each kind to run together?

sack_patrol Posted June 6, 2010 Posted June 6, 2010 I wouldn't mix different Ram together. I think I remember reading about this kind of thing long ago and the conclusion was that mixing ram like that leads to a performance loss. There's a reason for RAM Kits. Well I still want to get it booted up. I'll benchmark it and see how it runs. Anyone else?
Crazy_Nate Posted June 6, 2010 Posted June 6, 2010 You're going to have a rough time... It took a lot of work to get my ol' computer stable with four DIMMs. It's really dependent on the motherboard and processor. I could only do it with my SLI-DR expert and my Opteron 144 (it has a really good memory controller and it overclocks very readily ). My SLI-D's didn't really like it, nor did my other processors. With that said, I managed it with four DIMMs of identical modules...anything other than that is just more work and it might not work at all. There's a slew of options in BIOS relating to memory, so, if you can't boot with all four, try playing with some of the settings with one set of modules in. Then power down, add some, and see if it'll boot. It's really a trial and error process, but there isn't a whole lot else to do. Here's some things to try... loosen your timings by a decent margin, use 2T command rate (disable if I remember correctly), play with the drive strengths, and...probably up your chipset voltage slightly. Best of luck

Best of luck Thanks for help!... But I have tried on completely stock speeds and volts, so RAM timings shouldn't have to be adjusted. I tried forcing the slower RAM's latencies on it, with stock speeds and no luck. Right now my command rate is Auto, but it's 1T in CPU-Z when both mem kits are booted. Also (with my current OC settings) my chipset voltage is up. I believe by .1V if i'm not mistaken... And i'm lost when you say drive strengths
Crazy_Nate Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Here's some reading for you: Socket 939 Overclocking Database (OCDB): http://forums.overclockersclub.com/index.php?showtopic=91098 Socket 939 Discussion Thread: http://forums.overclockersclub.com/index.php?showtopic=91099 You wouldn't believe the amount of trouble it is to try and find some of the ol' DFI threads I'm mainly talking about playing with some of the more "expert" or complicated memory options. Nobody really knew what they do, but they've seemed to help.
HoLoDreaM Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 Thanks for those threads, but I'm not really concerned about getting it overclocked like most of that info covers. I minimum want to get it booted on stock clocks right now..

I minimum want to get it booted on stock clocks right now.. Well, the stock speed database is just about useless...because it's broken up into a bazillion threads. I'm just putting it up for reference to some of the more obscure memory settings. You can search through the thread for people who are running 4 DIMMs overclocked and see what they've got. Just search for something like "4x512" or "4x1024" within the thread.
