need advice on gpu clock issue

hi, my gf is having issues with her computer, ive found the issue, seems the psu (860 watt psu, with 36 amps on the 12v+ rails) is insufficient for her gtx 275, and is causing graphically intense programs and games to crash, im wondering if 'underclocking' will help at all, the amp rating is right on the absolute minimum, so i was thinking that slightly underclocking would help stability, by drawing less power from the gpu, how should i go about this? and could this cause problems ( i know im taking stress off the gpu not putting more on but would there be any issues asociated with changing frequencies? thanks in advance :)

Unlikely thats the problem. A GTX275 only takes around 220 watts. A 860 Watt PSU could power two easily even overclocked. It could be instability in PSU or driver, or is it overclocked? What make and model PSU?

I can't find the official source, but I've heard around the other PC forums that the GTX 275 requires at least 40 amps on the 12v rail(s). Others with 36 amp power supplies have reported shutoffs during use. I'm guessing underclocking may not help all that much, and in fact may lead to a false sense of stability. It might work but the health of your card may also go down in turn. There are definitely some good, cheap power supplies out there that can handle 40 amps on the 12v rail.

I dont think the PSU is it.

 

The only 860 watt PSU I could find with 36 amps is the Shaw 860W unit with two 12 volt rails (19 amp and 17 amp). Google that bad boy and see if you change your mind lol.

my 550w has better rails than that. does she have like 400w just for the CPU?

They're severely inflated wattage numbers. I believe it has 50 amps on the +5v rail and 47 amps on the +3.3v rail. This severely boosts the overall wattage number. When will you need 400+ watts for your motherboard components? 155W for +3.3v and 250W for +5v is pretty ridiculous.

 

The Seasonic X-750, by comparison, uses a combined 125W rating for their +3.3v and +5v rails (25amp max output).

its a shaw psu, so yeh 17 and 19 on the 12v rails, ive read the same, that it needs around 38 - 40 amps, so i was almost certain that it would be the psu, it wouldnt be dust, its a new computer, got it for her not long ago for her uni studies :) , anyway thanks everyone for the help, looks like il have to buy her a new psu, it isnt any real problem now, but when she gets back into 3d graphics with maya, it could be an issue, also she wants to play bioshock 2 :P thanks :foldon:

Where did you get that information Drdeath? I'm genuinely curious, I can't find the official numbers anywhere. The only thing I've seen were forums posts and they all consistently said it needs 40 amps.

Nvidia says MINIMUM POWER SUPPLY REQUIREMENTS Minimum 550W or greater system power supply, with a 12V current rating of 40A.

 

I think the problem is the PS. You need a better one.
