dr_bowtie Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Ok for the news... I got an ECS P55-Black Edition Motherboard and a i7-860... So from what I read the socket 775 coolers will work on this board...simply not my case with the cooler I intended to use...I wanted to use a Zalman 9700 cpns...the back plate wont fit the board with the Factory socket backplate currently on the board... Nor with the plate line up with the screw holes...it is off..slightly but off...so thats out...however the stock cooler works fine as it allows a little tolerance due to teh sloppy hold down mechanism it was designed with... Now what I need is a recommendation for a good air cooler... I do NOT want a Thermalright TRUE or any variation or ANY heatsink that requires lapping for optimal use...I want to run it out of the box and it be flat... I also dont want water cooling either...not gonna mess with it with the amount of swapping I do from time to time... Space is not an issue but sound is...I need something that cools efficiently without the noise... I dont mind a push/pull set up either...as long as its quiet... anybody recommend anything worth looking at...I need to get something ordered soon.. Though there is the Megashadow which comes with the 2nd set of fan clips http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835242004 A budget limit would make it easier to recommend something if you find these too expensive. I second the prolimatech Megahalems, although I changed to a Noctua NF-P12 fan as the Scythe Slipstream packed up in short order. I know it won't help now but next week I'm ordering another Prolimatech cooler for an AMD build and I won't need the 1156 mounting. I can send it to you for a test fitting but it will be like I said around 10 days before I could. It may work with it's mounting system. I may really push this thing hard at first just to see where it may go...being an ECS board the board will probably be the limiting factor...I'll have to ask Taco what he thinks... Mainly all I have ever used is Zalman 9700 cnps coolers as I havent had those not keep up...and I seriously thought about modifying the backplate to make the cooler work...but if there is something better then I would be ready for change... this rig will more than likely run stock most of its life...at 2.8ghz or a little more...I'll run it up until the point it gets 1c over stock and stop there... had no problem clocking my Q6700 to 4.2ghz and shoving volts in it but it lives at 3.0ghz and has since I put in in service... the Q9450 runs stock as well... It is part of the retention mechanism for the CPU and is compensated for in the design of the mounting mechanisms of bolt on heatsinks.
