Need help OCing my 2nd rig!

Recommended Posts

Hey Everybody!!

i have been overclocking my Pentium 4 cedar mill (651) and needed some advice on voltages...

So far the P4 is sitting at 4.64Ghz and is a bit unstable since i went past 4.6Ghz, and since i am newb i needed advice on how much i should raise the voltage, right now it is at auto.

My motherboard for this rig is an Asus P5WD2-E Premium.

temps right now are

idle: 38-43C

load: up to 63C (Prime95)

Any suggestions appreciated!

BTW - i am using a ZeroTherm Nirvana NV120 cpu cooler.

According to Intel's specs, it should stay under ~70C.

http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL94W

And this guide says that it should stay under 1.3375 volts.

http://gomeler.com/2006/02/24/overclocking-series-basics/

for voltage just bump it up one or two notchs at a time, and you many need to increase your northbridge voltage as well.

thanks for your help, but at the automatic voltage regulation it goes to 1.4V... O_o

Thats pretty much why you don't use "Auto" on most, or any of the voltage settings! To unreliable!

You'll get the most out of your system by setting most everything manually!

BTW...4.6GHz is a good OC for that chip!

If I remember correctly, thats a hot running chip? I think? Not sure!

So what are you doing? Trying to find it's max OC?

:withstupid:

  • High OC
  • Don't use auto
  • What are you doing?

Well - i was trying to reach max OC and was scared to put in too much voltage because i CANNOT find a trusted site since the chip is so old now... it's a cedar mill 651

and although it is the smallest P4 (65nm) it runs @ 60C idle when i underclock it to 3.00Ghz and 70+ load on stock cooler at Max speed... that is why i am loving my Nirvana NV120 cooler :D:D:D

it is running 36C minimum idle and max of 63C after 14 hours of prime 95.

i just need to know more info about voltages and how much a cpu can take beyond its limit (if any) and how much this P4 can take...
