My first REAL BUILD!!!!

Recommended Posts

my set up

9550 stock speed 2.83ghz

CM Haf 932 full tower case

EVGA 8800 GTS 512

WD Caviar Black 500 GB HDD

Ultra X-Connect 500 watt psu

OCZ 4GB Reaper (2 X 2GB)

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R

Zalman CNPS9900 HSF

Zalman VF1000 GPU HSF

ZALMAN RHS88 VGA Cooler

my case also has a full UV lighting treatment

and before someone asks water cooling is my very last resort.

I have a friend of mine who has a HAF midtower case that took his original haf fans and had some clear fans made and then added on some blue led's to them to give them even more lighting. im thinking of going the same direction but with a different color.

I will be starting off with trying to overclock the q9550 to 3.8ghz and would like to get 4.0 but not sure how stable/cool this will be on air. Once i have a stable oc on my cpu im going to oc my 8800 gts to around 800+mhz. i know thats definatly posible with the zalman vga cooler and the vf1000 coupled together. Im not looking for insane overclocks but im looking for substantial increases in performance across all spectrums. I also do video editing and work with photoshop. But i primarily do gaming.

My question here is with this set up and this is my first serious build, how do you guys (and gals) think i did for my build of a High Air Flow system. I considered the CM V8 but i didnt like the looks of this HSF and the CM V10 has me cringing at the weight and stress on the mobo.

could i possibly break the 4ghz threshold, and be stable and cool? (temp wise)

If not what am i missing out on? (other then water cooling)

this build was primarily inspired by my brother who boasts how his q6600 is so awsome at 3.6ghz, hes running a antec 900 with swiftech h20 220 water cooling on his cpu different memory mobo and swears its impossible to get a q9550 to 4ghz stable and sub 65c on my current setup. if possible id like to shut him up even if its only for awhile till after the burn in phase.

all comments and ideas are very much appriciated

Decent. What I would change on that list and get instead: The GA-EP45-UD3P, a 4870 1GB (gives you the option of crossfire later on with that motherboard), TX750W PSU, G-Skill 2x2GB 1066 ram, Xigmatek HDT-S1284 with a backplate, no aftermarket GPU heatsink. You should be able to hit 4ghz with that air cooler. However, water cooling is always going to be better, as long as it isn't a pre-built 120mm rad crapbox model. I will tell you that without water cooling don't even think about over 4ghz, it's too much heat for air. Also the V8 is good but heavy. If you can get even a 4890 that would be the best and you can crossfire later if needed. Or you can grab a GTX 260 C216 for cheap. It's all up to you. Also the HAF is already red-led crazy with the fans so don't throw in some blue or red cathodes, it will make it too much, maybe just 2 UV cathodes would be best. Also I'd recommend a DVD-RW drive if you plan to use any CD's  Oh and lastly get a nice high CFM Scythe fan to put on the CPU heatsink. Like either an ultra-kaze or a slipstream. Good luck man!

First: Swap out the 8800gts for an ATi HD4870 or 4890.,. They arent much more expensive and you will see a huge gain in performance.

Second: Swap the PowerSupply for a little more wattage and different brand. Ultra is decent but if you want to do some pretty substantial overclocking. Then go for a Corsair or PC Power and Cooling brand. around 700w would be good. maybe a little bit more if you plan on Crossfire or SLI.

skip the GPU cooler, skip the 8800GTS (EEEEEYUCK), step up to a ~600W PC Power Cooling or Corsair PSU (OCZ is good for the money too), get a Sunbeam Core Contact freezer for the CPU, get normal gskill memory since fancy heatsinks won't make it any better (or another brand if they are cheaper, but make sure to keep 1066mhz and 5-5-5-15 timings) and I can't recommend a different graphics card until I know what resolution your monitor is.

If you haven't bought anything yet then I'd suggest a Phenom II 940/790X computer, you'll have a better processor and save money
