AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+ Brisbane

Hi there, im new to the whole overclocking seen. And i had a question about my CPU, and if it is able to be OC.

For starters, here are my systems specs:

-AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+ Brisbane 2.8Ghz

-NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT 256 MB

-MSI K9N Nvidia GeForce 6100

-OCZ GameXStream 700W PSW

-OCZ DDR2 800 (2x1GB)

-Antec Three Hundred Case

I believe my BIOS version is V9.9, something of that nature. OK so, what im here for. Is my CPU able to be OC? because when i search my BIOS settings it appears that all the settings that would allow me to manipulate my HTT and the multiplier and all that seem to be locked. I tried searching the BIOS to unlock these settings, but I came up with nothing. Any help would be greatyly appreciated.

Thanks.

Is this a prebuilt setup?

Also CTRL F1 will sometimes unlock the BIOS.

Yes you should be able to OC that setup.

What kind of cooling are you using?

no i built this computer myselft (my first build :D)

but im using stock cooling ATM, im waiting for two 120mm case fans that push decent air (they range from 40-93 CFM).

i will give that CTRL+F1 a try and get back to you on that.

so i tried doing CTRL+F1 in the BIOS, it didnt appear to do anything (unless i was supposed to restart my comp so see it take effect?)

according to the system information in the BIOS, it says my BIOS version is actually v9.2(not 9.9)

but on the main menu of the BIOS, is says v02.61, so i dunno whats right. the dram/cpu clock/multiplier are still greyed out. did you guys have to set any certain settings to be able to OC this CPU?

try pressing the page up/ page down keys and the + and - keys when you may have these grey areas highlighted...

if it's not these keys, it should be something of the sort.

have you taken a look at the motherboard manual to see if it has anything on it?

if you want decent overclocking results, you will need (if you're running a stock cpu cooler) a good third party cpu cooler...

something like this, which is quite a good one.

also, here is something basic for you to read that should have you overclocking that cpu really soon.

the occt program linked in that thread will also run a stress test on the system if you don't want prime 95, but perhaps you should still download both for any future reference, use and variation...

prime 95 and occt are both very good...

occt is excellent for monitoring temps especially, but core temp is also very good as well if you want another good one.

you could download core temp here.

have fun!

first id like to say thanks for your help here.

i did trying using the page up/down and +/- keys but it doesnt do anything. i wish i could take a screenshot to show you what my BIOS looks like, cuase i cant even scroll over the multiplier/dram clock let alone try the page up/down method on it. guess ill look into my manual (which i should of done before posting this), but i just had a few more questions.

i do have prime95 and core temp, so thats good. but i read your post on one of those links how you said you should disable any spread spectrum. well i have about 3 different spectrums, one is PCI spread spectrum, SATA spread spectrum, and theres one more. i currently disabled all 3, so maybe this will change something. there is also a feature which says 'Auto disable PCI clock,' and that was enabled. should i disable this?

sorry for so much questions, im just being cautious. i have more thing to ask.

is it possible that my BIOS version is holding me back from overclocking? the version i have is v9.2, and the more current version i believe is v9.7.

thanks

UPDATE:

just read my manual, so now i know that i should disable all 3 spread spectrums if im overclocking (please correct me if im wrong). but something caught my eye, my manual has ONE extra feature on the BIOS main menu that my BIOS does NOT have. the manuals extra feature is 'advanced chipset features' which is for optimizing system performance, but that feature does not appear in my BIOS. what the heck?

hey;

no problem...

advanced chipset features should be in the main menu of the bios, when first going into it.

not exactly sure what the auto disable pci clock thing is, but perhaps you should leave it on if it was that way by default...

it shouldn't affect overclocking.

are you using anything in any pci slots?

if not, then it shouldn't matter anyway.

this problem should have nothing to do with the bios version, and you should only update (flash) the bios if absolutely necessary, as it could lead to an unstable system or perhaps other problems.

had this same sort of problem as you not so long ago, and it turned out to be page up/page down or something (just so happens it's an msi board as well)...

so most likely it's something very simple that's being overlooked.

you may consider calling the motherboard customer service and ask about it, they should be able to help you right away.

is this your motherboard or is it a different model?

if so, that link may help you out a little.

notice in one of the screenshots where advanced chipset features is located, yours should appear the same.

Can't see how it would become unstable, the worst that can happen is during the update process.

PS. easy on the "enter" key :P jk

the update process actually went really smooth.

it was some blue screen issues after updating, and after what seems like a little tweaking of things it went away...

perhaps it was settings issues in the bios or something, not sure what.

just a heads up for the bios flashing thing, as it can cause problems that you may not wanna have...

it's a pretty serious thing to mess with.

ok, ill avoid flashing the BIOS, it does seem pretty complicated for someone like me.

but my exact board is here

and yes, the 'advanced chipset feature' should be in my BIOS where it is in the screen shot in the link you provided... but its not.

i guess ill have to put in that call to MSI. my manual did say this board is great for overclocking, so maybe i am overlooking something.

thanks a lot for your help.

if i have any further questions, ill come back here :D
