Im going to build a system for a friend, but the OS is so expensive...

My question is, what's the difference between this

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic SP1 64-bit for System Builders - OEM

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16832116483

and this one

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic SP1 - Retail

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16832116467

I know it's a stupid question, but I can't seen to get it...

Thanks!

You won't get any free support from MS on the OEM version. Big deal. Like you can understand any of their support personnel anyway.

Technically I believe that to comply with EULA on the OEM version it has to stay installed on the original computer it was installed on - ya right.

Get the OEM version. You will be fine.

In the future if you want to build a new machine using the same copy of windows, just make sure to wipe it from the current rig.

System Builders allows you to swap major components without having to call Microsoft and tell them why you need them to let your validate your serial number again.

Personally I just got it with the new build I did and due to the bad seagate drives I had, I am very glad I did it. Saved me at least 5 phone calls as I put in an old HD while waiting for those to RMA, then put one it to test, then the other, then back to my raid 0 and then to do my perfect ready to go raid replacement I got after some more HDs went on sale.

So I like system builders and if its within a close price will probably get it for all the custom systems I build in the future.
