DLS2008 Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 I'm in the market for 2 new CPUs. I've been looking at E8400 and E8500. However, I just ran across an X6800 for $300 and a QX6700 for $400. What would you recommend? I don't plan to do any audio visual work on these as that is what my two Q9450 rigs would be used for if I need to. I will mostly game and run F@H. Should I get 2 E8500s, or one E8500 and an Extreme? I'm not sure what to buy. Which will give the best overclock?
IVIYTH0S Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 I'd say get two 8500's as they would save the money from not getting the extreme and both overclock insanely well
abid Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 get two e8500.... the price is not so expensive....
devit Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 e8500.others don`t worth it.
tonpal Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 Either an E8400 or an E8500 would be fine for gaming and folding.
abid Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 whats folding? how can i be a folding member?
IVIYTH0S Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 i've found when comparing the e8400/e8500/e8600(or even Q9450/Q9550/Q9650), the best value to performance is ALWAYS the middle one, because it is always such a tiny bit more money to go from the lowest model to the mid model and you get a faster clock and higher multiplier. The top third of the selection list is never worth it IMHO. Â I can't justify moving .5x multiplier in these comparisons E8500(9.5x)3.16ghz189.99 ---> E8600(10x)3.33ghz 269.99 Â Q9550(8.5x) 2.83ghz 319.99 ---> Q9650(9.0x) 3.0ghz 549.99 Â as you can see the jump between a e8500-e8600 there is a fair amount of money more (but arguably worth it because of the E0 stepping) but the jump from Q9550-Q9650 is absolutely rediculous in price difference (E0 stepping or not)
SystmFrk Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 right now I got the E8500 and is really great so yeh get the 2 of em cheap aswell
tanka12345 Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 I'd recommend two E8500's. They're alot cheaper and provide good OC'ing performance.
DLS2008 Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 Well, I just got 2 E8400s for $150 each. I couldn't justify spending an extra $40 for the E8500. Now it's time to get the rigs built and see what they can do. I'm hoping for somewhere over 4 GHz.

Enjoy em and keep us updated with how high ya get them
Frechy Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Those 8400's will almost certainly do 4GHz on a decent board.
