Need A Recommendation

Recommended Posts

I'm in the market for 2 new CPUs. I've been looking at E8400 and E8500. However, I just ran across an X6800 for $300 and a QX6700 for $400. What would you recommend? I don't plan to do any audio visual work on these as that is what my two Q9450 rigs would be used for if I need to. I will mostly game and run F@H. Should I get 2 E8500s, or one E8500 and an Extreme? I'm not sure what to buy. Which will give the best overclock?

i've found when comparing the e8400/e8500/e8600(or even Q9450/Q9550/Q9650), the best value to performance is ALWAYS the middle one, because it is always such a tiny bit more money to go from the lowest model to the mid model and you get a faster clock and higher multiplier. The top third of the selection list is never worth it IMHO.

I can't justify moving .5x multiplier in these comparisons

E8500(9.5x)3.16ghz189.99 ---> E8600(10x)3.33ghz 269.99

Q9550(8.5x) 2.83ghz 319.99 ---> Q9650(9.0x) 3.0ghz 549.99

as you can see the jump between a e8500-e8600 there is a fair amount of money more (but arguably worth it because of the E0 stepping) but the jump from Q9550-Q9650 is absolutely rediculous in price difference (E0 stepping or not)

Well, I just got 2 E8400s for $150 each. I couldn't justify spending an extra $40 for the E8500. Now it's time to get the rigs built and see what they can do. I'm hoping for somewhere over 4 GHz.

cool you still have two awesome processors (though i think that an extra half of a multiplier upgrade is worth 25 dollars(each) but that's just me. Enjoy em and keep us updated with how high ya get them :P
