SpeedCrazy Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Before you ask no i haven't done any research yet, been too busy recently to think. I'm looking for a USB 3.0 external drive housing to slap the Caviar black 500gb drives from my desktop in for backups and external storage. Does anyone have anything you would recommend from personal experience. Not looking to break the bank, I just need something that works and will last. Thanks y'all, Speed
ivangela Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 So, I haven't used the USB 3.0 version but I have the eSATA/US 2.0 version and it rocks (used it for >3+ years)! They have a new wifi version that supports USB 3.0 also, so just take a look here and choose
wevsspot Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 I've got two of these and one of the older USB2.0/eSATA models. All three have been rock solid. I've even dropped the old one (with a drive in it) on a tile floor and I'll be darned if the enclosure and the drive still work. Might not be pretty or fashionable but they are built like tanks. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182248&cm_re=external_drive_enclosure-_-17-182-248-_-Product

Waco Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Oh yeah...be careful around the edges that are machined.
SpeedCrazy Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Thanks guys, plenty of solid choices there. Probably gonna go with the vantec, cause I'm a tight wad. That said, I do kinda like the solidness of the rosewill or the wifi of the Tt... yeah I'm going with the vantec. Thanks guys. Waco Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 The vantec is solid aluminum with a plastic tray...plenty solid. Just watch the edges (or file them a little).
IVIYTH0S Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 I loved my old USB 2.0 dual bay Vantec, they are the best in the business when it comes to enclosures I think. I'm running a Kingwin dual USB 3.0 docking bay "enclosure" now and it's so-so, it works but is kind of buggy sometimes when I start my computer or add another drive with the 2TB that's anchored to it
SpeedCrazy Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Well i bought the vantec. Slick looking and feeling, easy installation. But the USB 3.0 refuses to work. Tried two different computers on know good ports and no dice. Google seems to suggest that some of their USB 3.0 devices require a firmware update, well of the two updates i found neither would recognize the device even in a 2.0 port where I can access it normally. Waco Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Are you sure your USB 3.0 ports work properly? It detected without issue on all of our machines (various chipsets).
