Pronunciation of "Mushkin"

I've been saying it just like it sounds... mush-kin. Friends call it "moosh-kin"... wtf? how the hell do you get moosh out of a single u???

Not too sure what's correct. I say it like mooshkin because in this case it has a better ring and sounds more natual to me.

They're saying "mooshkin" with the "oo" sound like that from a cow's "moo" or "boo" etc. The sound from words like bush and push is the double o with a curved line on top (dictionary.com). Mine is a single u with a curved line on top. I have to force myself to say it your way it just doesn't come out right. Falls somewhere in between the moo and muh sounds though.

The push sound of Pushkin is my favorite but as you will see in the first link there are two accepted pronuciations of Pushkin so maybe it applies to Mushkin.

Bummer those are the 2 pronunciations I can't bring myself to use, "boot" and "push" being examples. Is there a mushkin rep at dfi? I see them at the XS forums but not sure about here.

Think "bush." Mushkin is a Russian word. (My family is from Moscow, though I'm Jersey-an. )

 

BTW, Roadie, the pronunciation you thought at first (re: Pushkin sounding like push) is the more acceptable, I've never seen/heard that other pronunciation before.
