Ultra-D and Mavell Gigabit... Is it really GIGA?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Been a loyal DFI savvy for years. Waited enough to get my hands on the new nF4 one...

I'm still dealing with IRQ not less or equal BSOD when I play UT2004, but won't bother you about it until I do my research. Have another problem with Marvell onboard LAN - It should be Giga shouldn't it? It connects to my Giga switch at 100mbit only and I see 10 and 100mbit FD and HD in configuration (nothing about 1000mbit. I used the right drivers that came with the CD.

Thoughts? Did I get one of those bad mobos? Are there different versions of this board already? Device manager shows it as Giga, though.

please check the rules and the Important Info threads stuck to the top of this section, paying close attention to the second post in teh 'critical' thread (about system specs in your sig).

this helps us tremendously to help you solve your issue if we can see what is in your system every time you post.

Be as thorough as possible please. Voltages, timings, settings, bios version. The more information you give us about the problem, and the more details about your hardware in your sig = more help we can give you.

have you tried to force the connection @ 1000Mbit?

they should connect to gigabit switch at rated speeds without a problem...ill assume you have cabling and all the other necessities to get true gigabit connections/throughput?

Cyberparasite - Still though the connection speed should show up as 1Gb. My guess is cabling as well, do you know offhand if the switch is 802.3z or 802.3ab? Basically they are both gigabit standards but Z is good to 25m and ab is good to 100m, so cable length is a concern. To be honest I've never seen any retail products based on z but you never know.

Also just looking at the connector you need 4 wire pairs as opposed to the usual 2, this is the difference everyone is mentioning between cat5 and cat5 enhanced.

Maarek_Stele - I think when you say 350mb max you mean 350MHz, this is the max signal frequency on the cable and though it is related to the bitrate 350MHz does not equal 350Mb necessarily.

Also if you figure out that BSOD let me know Doom 3 is giving me similar headaches.

i got the same bsod... it turned out to be a power issue.

i'm not familiar with your power supply, but it may not be enough power. does it have a 24-pin connector or are you using an adapter? how many amps on the 12v rail? make sure all 4 power connections are plugged in. you may have to boost your ram voltages too. look under the critical info thread.

i had a thermaltake purepower 420w psu, and it was not enough... got an antec neopower 480w with a 24 pin connector and 2 12v rails, and i've run rock solid at 2.6 ghz.

Nevermind my confusion! Still, most times cat6 is the only guarantee for 1gb, as not every cat5e is rated tx1000.

For irq less than equal error messages, they are almost always related to memory problems. Some heavy prime should track it (don't trust only memtest).

nipplefish - THANK YOU! I have been spending lots of time trying to figure this out, and any hints are much appreciated. I have a new PSU on the way anyway but to be honest with all the lack of success I have had lately I have been losing hope. My PSU was good to 250MHzx10 at 1.85V on my LP-B but it's pretty clear the Ultra-D has very different power requirements.

My RAM unfortunately does not like volts at all, stupid Mosel Vitelic chips. That's interesting to know the TT 420 can't handle this board, I have built many a system (admittedly all low-end AthlonXP systems) with this PSU in it and had nothing but success.

Also unfortunately my system passes memtest86 and Prime95 for at least 24 hours, including the bit fade test. But thanks for the input any help is much appreciated.

Hello guys again and sorry for disappearing. I had a really hectic weekend. Updated my sig and I hope it's compliant now. I just don't know where to find my BIOS version, but it's the one I've got out of the box.

My GigaBit problem has been solved. It does not have a setting to force it to 1000mbit and that freaked me out. I use CAT5e cables and a D-Link 5 port GigaBit dumb switch. It's now connecting at 1.0 Giga.

About the BSOD. I tried a whole buncha settings, disabled my components one by one and still the same problem. I totally forgot about Prime95, I'll run it all night tonight to see where I'd get.

BSOD happens when I Alt-Tab out of UT2004 or sometimes close it. It says IRQ not less or equal. I also tried the same thing with BIOS Optimized Settings and no luck. Clock speed appears to have no role in this thing.

Now, if there's anything I need to do, please let me know and I will. I'm greatful that this great motherboard has a great forum like this, and guys like you. For the time being I'll keep playing on my LanParty NFII Ultra!

Cheerz,
