What are your work hours?

I just got back from a service call at a new client. This company has three manufacturing plants in three states. There are about 50 white collar jobs and several hundred blue collar workers.

 

The thing that caught me off guard is the hours kept by the "office staff" They work from 7am to 5pm Monday through Friday. That's 10 hours a day 5 days a week. Everyone, even the receptionist, is on salary so they don't have to pay overtime.

 

I have never seen a company get 25% more work for the same pay. It just doesn't sound right to me.

 

Anyone else have this kind of situation where you work?

in a 'right-to-work' state, they can do this sort of thing if you are on salary. California is the only state that mandates 8 hour workdays for hourly employees, and I think some salaried employees (California is a whole different country on it's own so whatever they do doesnt count haha).

 

Me, I work some days 30 minutes, some days 19 hours (RG and I have went marathon days a LOT when it comes close to release time for a new board).

 

He and I get to pick our hours...thas why you see me post at 5am or 9am or 2pm or 8pm etc.

 

we dont get no overtime either heh.

I understand the old "professional courtesy" thing about puting in the extra hours. When I worked in the casino business I went four days straight only getting naps in my chair (it was a great chair) leading up to Y2K.

 

But to mandate 10 hours on the job a day seems insane these days.

 

Now I understand why they can't keep an IT staff. They've been through five people in the last year alone. Now they're stuck with no one in house to manage the systems.

 

I guess I'm lucky I can make my own hours when there isn't an emergency. Right now I don't have any clients that are open past 5pm and the earliest start is 7am.

I am in the process of going back to school to get Cisco certified. I'm tired of the Landscaping business, been doing it for 9 years now. I'm hoping to get a good IT job somewheres...hopefully by this time next year.

Well in a kitchen you work from the start of your shift, until the last customer is out the door, and you can get the place shut down. Could be 6hrs or could be 12hrs. Ya never know. But i get paid for every minute of it. We don't get regular breaks per say, but we can run out and grab a smoke when ever the wheel is clear. Tonight was dead so I went through about a half pack or so.

I'm on salary. It has it's pros and cons. Con is I just barley make enough so they don't have to pay me overtime if I work more than 40hrs/week.(check the labor laws) Pro is If I call in sick, take a day off, leave early, come in late, I still get paid as if I worked 40 hours...

Make sure you get practical experience to go along with your Certs. I carry an MCSE and a very old CNE cert. I have to go behind a lot of the new guys on a regular basis and resolve what I call "book learning" problems.

 

The period of hiring anybody with certs is over now. I get called in to consult on hiring all the time. If a person has practical experience with no certs, they get my vote every time.

 

More than the book learning is the ability to problem solve. Lots of the cert babies can't reason through a problem. People that have the ability to problem solve can work their way through it.

 

I've been luck enough to have worked with a lot of different systems. I learn something new everyday.

 

One of my strong points is the network of friends I've developed over the years. The way I figure it, when I find a new problem, there's always someone who has already solved it.

 

I make sure my clients know that they're not just hiring me but also the greater tech community at the same time. This allows me to provide a higher level of service at a reasonable price.

Self employed seasonally here.

I tend to leave about 9am & return home before 2pm. Six months per year.

I have the best of both worlds I think. I used to be salary, but now I am a "tweener". I don't punch the clock I am not affected by the attendence system either. I usually get to work by 5:00 or 6:00 a.m. and if I am 15 mins. late, I work 15 mins. later. I have personal and sick days just like the hourly people and I get paid overtime for anything more than 40. I love it.

You guys are lucky you are not the owner.

Truthfully, this is retail so it is different.

 

7AM to 6PM Monday through Friday.

7AM to 4PM on Saturday.

Usually Inventory and paperwork on Sunday morning.

 

Employees work 40 hours and 1.5x for overtime hours.

 

 

 

7AM to 4PM on Saturday.
