Couple Ram Questions From A Noob

Recommended Posts

Ok so first I have two sticks of ram Kingston 512mbx2. I do not know the timings on these, nor how they effect the ram. I have a 865pe neo2-p motherboard, and I want more performance!

I want to upgrade ram, whats a good way I can get a good upgrade with ram without spending a lot of money and make sure that its comptabile with my mobo? What types of ram should I look at?

Thanks :)

Ram latency/timing basically tells you how fast the computer can access the ram. The lower latency, the faster the ram (to put it in basics). The lowest latency right now look a little something like 2-2-2-5. If you decide to go any higher (especially with the fisrt #), chances are you will lose frame rates.

Each ram timing means somthing different usually lower the better hear are what they do beilve this is correct.

Q: What are Ram timings and how are they read?

A: There usually read in five numbers like 2.5-3-3-6 @T1 each number means somthing different usually lower your timings are the faster your ram is but lowering your timings to much can cause your system to be unstable.

The 2.5 is the Cas#Latency- After a row is activited the amount of delay before an active row can be read is the Cas#Latency

Cas stands for column adress strobe singal: The latency (delay), in clock cycles between the assertion of the cas singal and the availability of vaild data on the DQ pins

The second 3 stands for Ras to Cas Delay- When a row is activated there is a delay before the data from the row can be read which is called Ras to Cas Delay

The third 3 stands for Ras#precharge- Amount of delay to de-actitive a row

The 6 is the cycle time (tras)- A minimum amount of time before a active column can be deactivated.

Once a bank is activated it can not be de-activated untill tras has elapsed

Command rate is the delay (in clock cycles) between when chip select is asserted and command can be issued to the ram

Usually there are 2 settings T1 (one clock cycle) T2 (two clock cycles)

Q: How do I find out what my ram timings are?

A: There are many different programs that can do this but I like cpu-z and everest home edition but there are others.

so my timings were 2-4-4-8 I think... but I want some more ram.

What timings should the ram be? would ddr be the best? is it compatible with my mobo?

I was thinking of this ram, would that be good?

it all depends on budget if a $200 or less go for patriot 2.5--4-4-11 @pc4800 which also does 2-2-2-5 @pc3200 i think its the best for ocing cuz it already has high performance value and tight timmings

for around $200 he could buy my ram that does 2.5-3-3-7 @ 300mhz and 1.5-2-2-5 @ 200mhz. :) lol

Well the ram in your link is the ram I use in my computer I use 4 of those sticks of ram and I have timings of 2.5-3-3-7 witch isn't that bad. I belive the best timing for ddr is 2-2-2-5 like this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16820227211 and there are different brands of ram that go that fast.

So could I use this with my Kingston ram? I would order those but they are out of stock... So what timing on ram is good? Im confused...
