Arkadiy Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 What would be the best linux for servers (most likely gaming) out of these: Fedora Core 1 Fedora Core 2 Fedora Core 3 Fedora Core 4 CentOS 3.x CentOS 4.x Slackware - Latest FreeBSD 4.x FreeBSD 5.x OpenBSD NetBSD Actually, just read this (self-explanatory): (this is the thing I am using) DirectAdmin (OS: Fedora Core - CentOS - FreeBSD - REQUIRES 32-bit OS)
Guest Flashstar Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Linux really won't play games very well. If you want games, you want windows.:/

DECwakeboarder Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Considering that he said servers, -nix is a great choice. I used FreeBSD 4.11 and got a ton of help from markie here on OCC, overall I've found SuSE to be about the best Linux distro though. Arkadiy Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Yea, since I know that Source runs fine on it....(I think I used to use Fedora Core 3)
cold_snipe Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 I would go with freebsd, definately not FC, or maybe slackware. I dunno, whichever one looks good to you. most games servers run on linux
Arkadiy Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Well, I can't run slackware, right now I am between: FreeBSD vs. Fedora Core
bigdaddy25fb Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 For stability and maximum uptime, go with FreeBSD, definitly not for the faint of heart though, especially when it comes to getting linux game servers to run on it. Markie would be glad to help I'm sure though, and there are plenty of tutorials on google. Fedora is fine if you dont mind having the occassional downtime with it. (and by occasional I mean like every 30 days or so when it encounters a random memory bug, the only thing ive seen go longer than 60 days or even a year for that matter is a BSD server)
Arkadiy Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 I know how to setup the servers That is nothing hard, it was just I wasn't exactly sure on which OS would be the best....
markiemrboo Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Markie would be glad to help I'm sure though 565197[/snapback] Well of course Of course, I would vouch for FreeBSD..... but i'm a BSD fiend, so take that with a .... pinch of salt? or something! Compxpert Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 Suppriseing you didn't think of using gentoo for a server. You would have to install eveyrthing your self but in the end a server with gentoo would end up being more stable and faster.
