Usb Flash Drive

First of all, I apologize if this is the wrong section for this, but I am new at this and trying to figure it out. As for my question, I am new to the world of flash drives, and I want to buy one. My only requirements are that it has 512kb to 1gb of space on it and that it has a blue LED light (yes, i realize that is only an eyecandy thing but it is nonetheless a feature I want. If anyone has any good recommendations for me, I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance for the help.

First of all, welcome to the OCC.

Second, what exactly is your budget? I also assume you want at least a 512MB and not a 512KB drive :P

There are a lot of drives out there. What are your preferences? Do you want high-speed read/write? Do you want it to look pretty (besides the LED)? How big or small do you want it? I know these are a lot of questions, but the more you can narrow it down, the better we will be able to look for one that fits you perfectly.

I personally have a PNY Attache 256MB that I bought from Staples for less than 30 bucks because of an emergency. It has an LED that blinks when it's being used and it works relatively fast. It's not exactly the most beautiful drive out there, but it works well for the price and is a great size. I'd recommend it for moving/carrying around a lot of documents and pics. I haven't tried really large files with it though (that's wat my mini-DVD-RW discs are for)

I was looking to spend between $20-70. I don't want it to be any larger than a few inches (I think that's standard USB flash drive size). The speed isn't absolutely critical, but I would like it decent. As for style, I would like it ideally to be silver (goes well with the blue LED :P ). I hope that narrows it down a bit. Thanks for the quick reply.

(And yes, I did mean 512mb :) )

Oh, and thanks for the welcome

All right, let's start with 512MB

This is the PNY model I was talking about in 512MB flavor (I have it in 256MB)

Sandisk

Apacer

This one isn't silver, but I thought it looked pretty cool.

All of the above I found with a simple search at Newegg. It's hard to tell whether they have LEDs if the description doesn't say, but the above ones all have LEDs (except the bottom one)

Now on to 1GB

Sandisk Mini

Sandisk Cruzer Micro

Those two above were under the $70 budget you have, but if you're willing to spend a little bit more, you can increase your variety by quite a bit.

Increasing your budget by less than 10 bucks can get you the 1GB version of the Apacer I mentioned above.

I personally like the RiData's cool swivel design and the fact that it's jet black. At less than 40 bucks for twice the space I have on my Attache, I think I might consider upgrading to either that or perhaps the 1GB version for a little less than $70.

I got done looking at newegg about half an hour ago. I saw all of those (except the Apacer one), but as I have never bought one of these before, I had no idea what brands were good etc. (only ones I had heard of were kingston and sandisk). The blue LED thing is mostly just my wishful thinking. It'd be really nice if it had one, but it is not imperative that it does. Any specific clues on what I should be looking for? The only really important spec to me was the storage.

Thanks for the patience while I slowly narrow it down. :)

I have the Sandisk Cruzer Micro (512mb version) and I love it. Its probably the smallest USB flash drive you can buy. It is silver colored with clear plastic surrouning the casing. Of course it also has a blue LED. Does all of this info match your criteria? :D

Yea, that's the one I was looking at :). My only concern with it was that a lot of reviews said the cap doesn't stay on. Have you experienced that? or have they fixed that problem?

The cap can come loose after a while (two are included). Other than that its a awesome little device.

I have a kingston 128mb thumb drive. I love it, its been great to me and has taken one hell of a beating. Its been washed, dropped, stepped on and it still works like a charm. I lost the little cap for it, but thats not all that important to me. I got the thing for FAR too so that made it even better.

I have been using Lexar for the last 3 years and had one of their 256mb drives It got lost in the mud while riding 4-wheelers, attacked by the washing machine 3 or 4 times, went in the dryer once. It lived through all that and staying in my pocket for 2.5rs until i decided i needed more space. Then for around $50 after mail in rebates, i got the 1GB Jumpdrive i have now. It's ben washed once. In my pocket atm. Anyway, Lexar tends to have the fastest read speeds Im actually going to go test the read speed of mine now....Ok well i was going to, but this PC's running win2000 and doesnt want to....I have owned drives from PNY, Lexar, Sandisk, and used many others, by far i like the quality of the Lexars best.
