OptikaliLLusion Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 So I'm trying to back up my files. I plug in my firewire drive and it seems like Windows recognizes it. It says "Safely Remove Hardware" and has the right name for the hardware (SmartDisk Corp. FireLite 20GB Smartdisk). However, opening up My Computer, I see: C: (my main drive) A: (floppy) D: (CD drive) E: (my DaemonTools virtual drive) No firewire drive though. I have the driver installed. I have the drive connected through my sound card's FW port.
fire_storm Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 Did you try unpluging and pluging the device in? Also try restarting the computer.

sykocus Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 right click on my computer then go to manage. then find the disk manager, see if the drive is there, and you can give it a drive letter.

steve burnell Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 silly question, but is it formatted?
IUMaestro Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 steve's right i think. if it's a new disk or has been written to zero's it has to have an MFT on it man. partition it using disk management. windows calls it "initializing" it.. now would be a good time to partition it how you want to then format it in ntfs. Ste Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 How would U format a external Device thats not connected Vie sata or Ide, Ive never heard of that. I just thought that external devices like usb drives and Firewire where in already formatted and ready for use in FAT32.
IUMaestro Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 negative. new drives of any type will be all zero's.. nothing. if it shows up in disk management which you said it did, that means it sees the drive. so everything is right.
