All of those on the TOP500 list of the world's fastest supercomputers use the open-source operating system, and it is that open-source nature that has helped it achieve this milestone. Many supercomputers today are built for specific tasks, and to get the most out of them, customized operating systems are desired. Instead of developing a new OS from scratch, the open-source code of Linux allows the optimizations to be developed and put in place at much lower cost.
