New skylake build--backplate shorting motherboard

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I haven't posted on here in a long time but I'm pretty worried about this one...

Just upgraded my AMD rig to an Intel i7-6700k. I've been wanting to reuse my old after market heat sink since the new processors don't come with one.

I put my computer all together and the video signal, peripherals and 2 fans would not work, after investigation I found out that the cooler I had even though it is compatible with 1150/5/6 975 etc....and I read that they should've been comptaible with 1151 was not and the back plate well a portion of one arm crossed the back of the MB and bam there was that problem. Anyways I verified that it works and wasn't doa or something so it was without doubt the back plate for my cpu heat sinks.

I've read online you can use nylon or rubber washers to stop this short of thing but can you use them between the board and the back plate? They washer will literally be on solder points on the back of the board

Does anyone know? Should I get a new cooler for 50 bucks or spend 40 cents on washers?

If the board is not borked a flat piece of rubber glued to the board facing part of the plate has worked for me in the past. I have also used liquid electrical tape to insulate brackets.
