NikoDG Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 Hey guys, I'm trying to update the firmware on my Vertex 3 Max IOPS SSD, but it is my boot drive so that makes it a little more difficult. The OCZ toolbox tells me to set up a bootable USB to do it, so I formatted a USB drive (FAT32) and then I tried to boot from it. It gets stuck in a reset USB drive loop though, and fails do to anything. Any though? Thanks, Niko
SpikeSoprano Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 hey niko, I have a vertes 3 also and you have to reload windows after a firmware update unfortunately, I had to put my ssd as a second drive to do it and it formats the drive when it updates. PITA !
NikoDG Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 Will I be losing out if I don't update the firmware?

PITA ! That doesn't sound right... my Vertex 2 and Agility 3 have been updated several times and have never lost data.
SpikeSoprano Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 Do you have it partitioned Ivi ? @ NIKO, I didn't see a difference so if I had to do it again I wouldn't.

I think they both had/have two partitions. system (inaccessible) and then windows (accessible)

SpikeSoprano Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 Just did some digging apparently now you can load Linux on a usb flash ,boot off it, put the toolbox on the flash and use it to update the firmware. As I did mine about 18 mos ago this plan was not around. So if this is what you want to try make sure in your bios it's set to boot from the usb external drive and try it, but as I said it might not be worth the trouble unless you are having issues with your ssd. IVIYTH0S Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 (edited) Yeah, in any case backup all or just your important data. I've had successful windows flashes but usb is much safer. (I actually had a partial misflash with windows once that was corrected with a usb reflash...drive was heating up something fierce and was freezing for 2 seconds every 10 seconds until I corrected it but she's still hanging with me strong!) wevsspot Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 Niko, are you sure that you made your USB thumb drive bootable? Formatting in and of itself does not make the USB drive a bootable device. You'll need a linux bootable or other method of making the thumb drive a bootable device. HP has a tool Microsoft has a tool And there are various Linux based methods After you have made the USB drive bootable, then you can put your flash files on the drive. After that make sure to set your USB drive as the first bootable device in the motherboard BIOS options.

Praz Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 Hello The OCZ Bootable Tools will update the Vertex 3 and the Bootable Tool iso is a bootable image. Rufus works well for prepping the USB stick. There are also detailed instruction linked below for doing this as well as setting up the needed network connection. http://www.oczforum.com/forum/showthread.php?112816-PC-BOOTABLE-TOOLBOX-This-Tool-updates-firmware&p=794820&viewfull=1#post794820
