Recommended Posts

I am not sure what to upgrade my video card to. I want to be able to play games but current card is not the best. If power supply needs to be upgraded with a new video card then i will change both. here are specs on my comp. I would like a total rebuild but that is out for this year...maybe next year.

What PSU do you have? How much are you willing to spend?

It has 300w for max output but figure i will end up replacing it. Not too woried about buying these 2 items if needed just can't replace all of it yet and if psu is good enough i will use in my build next year.

It hurts my head trying to make sense of what you have posted.

Do you have a link to the PC on the HP website?

Not that hard

Specs

AMD Athlon2 x4 620

3 sticks of ddr2 ram ( i would assume 1 or 2gb sticks)]

OEM motherboard (4 dimm slots, 1x PCIe 16)

Onboard GPU

300w PSU

Win7 Home Premium

budget of 6-700 dollars on new PSU and GPU

@op, what do you use this for?

Probably get a 7850 and a decen 650w PSU if your gaming, that is a large budget for these two parts and anything more than a 7850 will be held back by the rest of the system

What model is that HP OP???

Could you start up a new build in its case??

I'd personally start up a fairly fresh i3/i5 computer with $800, it'd be easy to fit everything you'd need in there.

It wouldn't be worth it to buy just because, but if your motherboard wasn't OEM, I'd recommend overclocking the Athlon II X4, they are pretty awesome super budget gaming CPUs (when overclocked). But since you'd need to already fork out money I'd get:

new CPU, Motherboard, PSU, GPU, 1 extra stick of ram so that you aren't running 1 and half channel lol. Maybe a new case if your HP is too small and the money put towards the case won't have you sacrificing performance

I am not on that computer as I am at work and just put the stats in an e-mail so i could link at work (as I am at work right now). I will link rest of info as soon as I get back home. It does have 3 sticks of ram(2G each) . I just can't rem model right now. I use it for a couple of games and some office programs(that run fine on it now). I am looking to build a new one in spring but want to build a high end gamer rig then so was hoping these 2 upgrades would carry over in next build. If not then i would upgrade and replace everything in the spring.

I will check if mobo is oem as I am not sure as I just going on memory and I bought the system about 3 yrs ago from Future Shop.

Did the system come with 3 sticks of memory??

The GPU and PSU will carry over, so I guess it's not imperative to do a full refresh if the rest still fits the bill.

You could get a cheap AM3+ motherboard, an extra stick of ram and just see what the little guy can do. I've overclocked two Athlon II quads to about 3.4ghz, I'm curious to see where yours gets to (seems they usually range from 3.4 to 3.8ghz), they are great chips that game very well once overclocked.

This board here actually comes with two 4GB sticks of memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157280 $85-$90 (I'm confused if it actually has shipping or not)

PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703027 Might wanna see if they throw up another promo code, they seem to often have very nice promo code discounts on this unit (for instance the one for 15% just ended yesterday but it may be back) but for now $110 ($90 w/ MIR)

GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814129205 7950 from Visiontek, will serve you long and faithful and has a lifetime warranty as a bonus! $300

Worst case the Athlon II still doesn't meet your needs and you end up selling it, but now you can bundle with a motherboard combo that people would actually want and make back some of the money and basically pay probably half the memory off if not make it free.

Just my opinion

Also for overclocking you'd need this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099 Good old Hyper 212, $35 ($30 after MIR) which will go long nicely with a new intel chip as well

If you get an aftermarket heatsink like IVIY suggested, just make sure there is enough clearance in your case to fit one of those.

If you are building a decent gaming pc next year and have that kind of budget to spend on those two components, I would try for a 4gb GTX 670 or even a 680. But those will cost you a pretty penny.
