Atheists/agnostics with religious parents?

I'm very curious. My parents are Jewish but mostly non-practicing. I'm agnostic and considering breaking it to them sooner rather than later.

I would add a fourth option to Question 2, as you need to vote in both questions for it to work.

Something along the lines of "I voted no above" or "N/A"

IMO what someone says they are means nothing, it's what they do with their resources (time/money). If someone says I'm Jewish/Christian/Buddhist/whatever but they don't act according to the beliefs of that religion, then they are functionally agnostic. So, it's no surprise that you are agnostic since you say your parents are functionally agnostic ("non-practicing").

IMO what someone says they are means nothing, it's what they do with their resources (time/money). If someone says I'm Jewish/Christian/Buddhist/whatever but they don't act according to the beliefs of that religion, then they are functionally agnostic. So, it's no surprise that you are agnostic since you say your parents are functionally agnostic ("non-practicing").

 

They're becoming more practicing now, which is what's causing a problem for me. They'll celebrate Shabat every other Friday, observe high holidays (as they always have), etc. I'm just not too sure on how to approach them and tell them just yet.

Just tell them is thew best policy, the longer you wait the harder it may become. I was lucky my mother is catholic while my father was protestant, they both lapsed for love and brought me up to believe what I wanted.

My biggest problem is my girlfriend (whom I have been with for years) was raised Christian and is agnostic. I'm raised Jewish and agnostic. It doesn't bother us at all. However, my parents object because she isn't Jewish (they don't know I'm agnostic), and insist I be with a Jewish girl, bla bla bla. Hopefully they don't react like they usually do when I try to talk to them, which is by yelling and getting butthurt.

My parents both know. My mom was a little upset, but she understands that it's my choice. My dad couldn't care less. He was married in a church (the first time) and I think that's the only time he's ever set foot in one. He probably is agnostic at heart, but won't tell his parents or my step-mom that.

 

My step-mom tried to be a pain when she found out I was agnostic. She asked me "do you believe in God?" I answered "No." She said "We really need to have a talk about that!" to which I followed up with a deadpan "No we don't." She thankfully hasn't tried to be pushy about it since. I don't want to get in an argument with her (she's an awesome step-mom, just a bit too pushy sometimes).

My mom would try to lecture me and convince me otherwise, and my dad would completely flip out.

 

If I answered my parents with "No we don't" I'd get chewed out so quick. You seem to have a really lenient step-mom.
