Although another 6870 will help, it may not be what you're looking for, so it's probably not worth it. My dual overclocked GTX 460 1GB's in SLI will still outperform two overclocked 6870's in Crossfire.

...

No it won't. 460 SLI scores around 21000 on 3d mark vantage, 6870 CF scores around 27000. This is almost 30% higher, not really in the same class.

PS

Yes, you can find some game which is opimized for this side or the other, but 30% is 30%. Overclocking may bumb you up 10% or even a bit more, but you can overclock 6870 as well.

Not really in the same class my butt.

First, I said MY overclocked GTX 460 1GB's in SLI will outperform two overclocked HD 6870's in Crossfire: http://3dmark.com/3dmv/2937632

You can also compare my score versus others that overclocked their HD 6870's in Crossfire: http://www.overclock.net/ati/859752-my-6870-crossfire-x-3dmark-vantage.html

Second, you're comparing the HD 6870's in Crossfire to GTX 460 768MB's in SLI...

Show me some benchmarks of some overclocked HD 6870 in Crossfire, and I'll compare them with my GTX 460 1GB's in SLI.

That is what I would do.

Why would he need an monitor the one he's got is pretty good one,i say 6950 CF,if you wanna save more money get another 6870 they scale very well but before goin cf i would suggest that to check that the games you play support multiple gpus.

I think you are a little mistaken, my friend

first of all, the 6870 can take big voltage increase not to mention crazy overclocks

second the 460 is not even in the same class, you might be getting confused with a 6850

the 460 is a great card but it is still a 150$ card now

we can still dream about the good olde days

Wrong again. http://www.overclock.net/ati/859752-my-6870-crossfire-x-3dmark-vantage.html

Can any of them beat my GPU score of 32756.25?

I've seen a GPU score of 29445 at 950/1100.

The best score did beat my overclocked GTX 460 1GB's in SLI with a GPU score 32955 at 1075/1185, but that guy had an i7 990 at 4.8GHz to help.

Please back up your trash talk with proof. The GTX 460 1GB might not be in the same class, because it's in a class of it's own.

Why would he need an monitor the one he's got is pretty good one

it is fine for watching TV and soap operas but for video games 1920x1200 is standard or even 'entry' level for high end gaming on wide screen

he was the one who wanted a high end gaming machine so I am letting him know where his computer is subpar or lacking and needs improvement

Okay, I missed your 1 GB of memory. Amount of video memory can make a big difference in CF/SLI.

Regarding OC; your build looks OC'd above safe limits, maybe just enough to post the score. The guys at Guru3D got 800 MHz on their OC, you've got 960! I'don't think the different amount of memory helps overclocking either way.

My build is watercooled, so temps and sound are never an issue (never gets past 47C). I play all my games on it at that setting, it's safe even at 1212mV (properly cooled). Highest overclock at 1087mV is 920MHz Core Clock, so I'm only getting 40MHz - 50MHz of a difference with extra voltage.

Oohh!@ personal 3D mark vantage numbers!!! just like how nvidia has always been in a class of it's own, am i rite?

there are plenty of 6870 crossfire numbers going around, just because most people are sensible enough not to push max voltage on them doesn't mean your card is better

you also might like to know that AMD limits the clock speed in CCC which I am sure you are not even using the stock nvidia software or you would be limited as well

if you compare the card at stock or similar speeds the 460 is not so amazing as you would like to think

we all can't break the rules and be an amazing overclocker like you

besides you seem to think everyone wants to run their cards on max, which is totally absurd, most people do not want to hear a vacuum cleaner in their case

Why even take this to an Nvidia vs AMD fight? I know your preference is for AMD, but you'll see me recommend AMD graphics cards all the time.

Don't even take this to a sensibility issue. When the HD 6870 came out, it was $240 when the GTX 460 1GB's were at $170. The HD 6870's never dropped below $180 after MIR, while GTX 460 1GB's have dropped to as low as $119.99 after MIR. Saving $120 - $140 is more "sensible". You can invest that saved money for better cooling.

Why are you even here if you're not going to overclock? This is OverClockersClub, not StockClockersClub. The reason I overclock is to get better performance without paying the extra cost of what I would look for at a higher end "stock speed" component. You don't see me with a GTX 580 or a HD 6970 2GB, do you? Why would I need to pay that much when my two overclocked GTX 460 1GB's in SLI outperform them? Don't even talk about sensible.

You can still overclock and keep fan volumes low enough not to hear them. Fans at 40% speed are pretty quiet, and can keep cards cool enough at high overclocked speeds (but as a safety measure, alway enable fans to get to 100% fan speed when nearing within 10C the max temp threshold).

Akmirdock, you have 500$ to spend. Buy another 6870 for 200$ and spend the rest on watercooling. Then let's see if you can beat Elcapitan at his game :)
