supernoob needs help with first bios OC

Recommended Posts

Okay, I put together my own rig, and tried using the AMD overdrive utitlity which auto-tuned it to 3.8Ghz from 3.4Ghz on a 955 BE with a Xigmatek Red Scorpion S1283 H.D.T. CPU Cooler and artic silver 5 thermal paste, but

didn't run stable. I am new to overclocking, and decided it's best I do it in bios.

I don't want to change my RAM, just stuff on the mobo, and cpus

I have a AMD Phenom x4 965 BE processor with the above mentioned cpu cooler (which is idling at 41 degrees celcius, is this hot?)

and the motherboard I have is a Gigabyte Ultra Durable 3, Model: MA77OT-UD3P

I have an Antec 902 chassis and LOTS of fans.

I appreciate any and all help in assisting me to get this puppy running overclocked and stable, as well as advice/suggestions. If I left any details out of what I need to list, let me know

Idling at 41C can be hot depending on your environment. For example, my house is around 19C, but I idle at around 25C

Moral of the story, your ambient temperature and case temperatures are very useful.

If your house is moderately cool (around 70F) I'd think that 41C is really high. You might have your heatsink mounted wrong, or too much/little amount of TIM.

What is your voltage at? FSB?

Google to find more articles on OCing. Also you have a unlocked CPU so OCing should be as easy as upping your multiplier.

i've googled and googled, I usually like to figure stuff out myself, but was frustrated after not finding the answer I want (even watched youtube videos) but they didn't help for my mobo/cpu combo imo, so a friend suggested this site.

The temp in my house is around 72 celcius, the gpu is idle at 34 celcius, think it is a heatsink issue at this point, but I will be re-seating it tomorrow or this evening (third time doing that so far since I added the cpu cooler) and I'll

report back the idle temp.

well I reseated the cooler, and it was idling at around 33-34 celcius with the heatsink fan not running, I put it back on, and now it's fluctuating from 34C to 40C again. Maybe the vibration of the fan is causing the problem? gonna try taking it off, but wouldn't I need a fan on that cooler

to overclock it? errrr! so aggravating! here is what cpuid hardware monitor said "before" i put the fan back on the heat sink:

thanks alexandre, I'll give that a thorough looking at once I fix my heat issue :(

i literally want to smash my rig (only in the matrix though =P ) because it's hot AGAIN, the cpu fan is off the radiator, thermal paste applied AGAIN for the 3RD . time today! What am I doing wrong FFS? lol.... I've tried every which way applying it, the grain of rice size-n-smash, the even thin coat application.

i'll try one more thing, see if it's an air flow issue, as when it was cool, briefly, the side panel was off...I "believe."

Try a differnt program for temps sometimes they are off, try core temp and speed fan

Don't get too down on yourself just yet combatzombie! I have a 965be and initially used a Xigmatek Dark Knight S1283 to cool it, and once I started overclocking it got pretty ugly! The cooler was only slightly better than stock and it really started to struggle at 3.8ghz for me. I swapped for a NH-D14 and haven't looked back since. My first suggestion would be to pick up a new HSF budget permitting, but that is just my opinion. Also how are your fans set up in your case for intake/exhaust?

HUGE fan on top blowing out (200mm?), two fans in front pulling in, one on side pulling in, one on back blowing out (you want mm sizes?) good air flow, no obstructions...dont' know why. I think I hate this new cpu cooler. I reseated it 8 times today, and reapplied thermal paste 5 times.
