DID a stupid thing... can you help? photo recovery after wipe

Its a HP pc with windows xp pro on it. It had a error not allowing it to log in, even from safe mode... it had not been wiped in years, so i figured id redo the pc since all the data had been removed already. Come to find out the family photos were still on it.

I used the HP recovery program to reinstall windows, and I have done all the windows updates. What chance do I have?

Thanks... I feel sick right about now.

I did this a LOOOONG time ago but with files instead of pictures. You'll have two choices, try to recover the data yourself with a "data recovery program" (ahem google) or other resources. Second there are places that will do data recovery for you. I think Best Buy Geek Squad can do it, if not they'll be able to point you in the right direction over the phone.

There's several free options in the form of Boot CDs, two of them are Ultimate Boot CD and Emergency Boot CD. Burn the images to a disk as an image (most free burners will be able to do that) and boot from the CD-ROM drive. Otherwise there are some costly programs you can buy, or if worse comes to worse, send the drive in to a data recovery place. You will pay through the nose if you take the last option, but I know one guy who lost his entire family photo collection (including scanned photos), he said it was worth it. I think he payed about $800 for a few gigabytes.

I wish you luck.

There is a free program called Recuva that works REALLY well, especially being that its free. Here is a link to download it: http://www.piriform.com/recuva

Its a pretty simple program you should be able to figure it out. Doubt it will find everything. But in my experience with Recuva its found 90% or more of the deleted data. But again every situation is different, best of luck!
