Core i5-655K overclocking help?

My current build is using an EVGA P55 SLI board paired with an i5-655K processor, and I've ran into a problem here. When I push the multiplier past 24x, the system will boot and the BIOS will report the processor running at that desired setting (In this case, 150x28 for a speed of 4.2GHz), but when Windows loads and I run my diagnostics programs (CPU-Z, CPU meter gadget, etc...), they report the processor only running at 24x (Giving me a speed of only 3.6GHz). I have my voltages set to 1.325 for the CPU, and 1.8 for the RAM, with the RAM underclocked to the lowest setting. In theory, this should work, so why is it that the multiplier, which is supposed to be locked, topping out at 24x? Am I missing something here? I hope someone can help me figure this out, PLEASE

 

(Yes, I am posting this in two separate boards to make sure this is read, I've been trying to figure this out and no response from anywhere. Hoping you guys can help me out here)

Is IEST turned on?? This will lower your multiplier automatically in an attempt to save power when the CPU is not being used(no load).

 

Why is your ram voltage set so high? is that what the ram is rated at?

IEST and Turbo are both turned off. The RAM is rated at DDR3-1600 at 1.9v as per Kingston. However, I doubt that the RAM can even go that high with this board anyway, so it's more of a stability reason

That is too high for a LGA 1156 or 1366, the memory controller isn't meant for that.

Yeah memory controllers on these CPU's prefer 1.65v, id try and keep it that way. Not sure why you'd need all that voltage for DDR3 memory anyways...

 

If IEST is off then im not sure what to tell ya then. I have no idea why the Multi would be stepping back on its own.

Yep, get new ram or try underclocking it so you can set it at 1.65-1.7v

 

Intel has upped the max to 1.8v (1156), but I still don't like running mine past 1.65v

Well, I changed the voltage, and the overclock was still buggy. There's got to be someone out there who has the same mobo/cpu combo that I have, the odds of it not happening are just unbelievable. What irks me is that the RAM is supposed to run at 1600 with the correct voltage/timings, and yet it still doesn't boot after I put in the correct setting, even with the CPU set to stock for everything

It could be that your memory has errors one or two of the sticks but that does not change the fact that you need to to use RAM that uses less than 1.65v or you will have premature CPU failure.

Checked for errors. Nothing. Either way, I still don't get how this ram is rated for 1.7~1.9 at DDR3-100 but DDR3 isn't supposed to go higher than 1.65v

1.65v is the specification from Intel so that you do not burn up the memory controller with high voltages like we saw with the AMD A65 socket 939 chips. People were using 3.0+volts to the memory and low voltage for the cpu/memory controller and killing them left and right. Intel has given the guidance that anything over 1.65v could cause harm to the IMC. Not really sure why the increase in the multiplier is not taking when set in BIOS. Are you using the latests versions of your reporting programs. The latest BIOS for the Board? If not try that since your BIOS should be updated so that the BIOS recognizes the K spec processor and will keep the settings. I had no problems with the Kspec 655 in my Maximus III Formula or P7P55D Premium.

Yeah, I made sure to update CPU-Z and the Windows Gadget (Published by Keat, the CPU meter, Network meter, and Drives meter). I also updated the BIOS for the board (EVGA P55 SLI, the basic P55 board from EVGA). And while it recognizes the K specification, it's still very buggy. A few days ago I got Windows to load and run, and it noticed the CPU speed at 4.8GHz when I only put it to 4GHz. Where the extra speed came from, no idea, though I'm thinking it could be an issue with the CPU itself, because I tried to reboot the system after noticing it, and it would not do a soft reset, I had to manually turn off the computer and turn it back on. I just can't figure out for the life of me what's happening here.

 

As for now, I just went to basic settings and reset everything to default until I straighten out this mess. I'm thinking of giving it another shot with different settings, like seeing if I can get the RAM to operate at 1600MHz instead of 1333. After all, it's DDR3-1600 anyway
