Very high idle temps, Q9300 w/ P5N-D

The system hasn't been overclocked yet, but the idle temps are very high at around 60C for each core. The cpu cooler is upgraded to a Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus. Even if the cooler was a complete pos, I'm dumbfounded on how the idle temps could be so high. There is adequate case circulation with all fans on high.

I'm going to re-seat the cooler when i get some better thermal paste, but if anyone has any ideas about this, I'd really appreciate it.

i had that exact same cpu and cooler and was getting similar temps.

that cooler is junk and i had two 120mm fans in push pull config and still 55c at idle at stock speeds.

so i swapped it with a coolit ECO and temps dropped way down 36c at idle 42c oced @3.6

my advice junk that cooler

there's junk, then there's far worse than stock. Which there's no way a stock cooler would even run at 60C idle

Not a junk cooler my friend, there must have been something wrong with the installation or the cooler you had specifically. Those are nice temps with the ECO, what kind of voltage are you running and what chip?

Chaser, try pulling up the cooler again, clean it off and apply a fresh coat of thermal paste to the cpu. With my hyper 212+ I got the best results when I was slightly more liberal with the thermal paste. It fills in the gaps ant works quite well.

You should be able to pull a nice overclock with that, make sure you did the braket correctly. It took me a couple tries to figure it out ;)

and since no one else has asked have you updated your bios the Q9300 has problems with giving correct temps. when i first installed mine it was reading 22c at idle which was far from correct

The bios is the newest version for my mobo.

I ended up lapping the cooler, reapplying thermal paste after taking the old crud off, then slapped 2 100+cfm fans for a push-pull. Undervolted the vcore by a tiny bit to 1.25v. Added another case fan. My temps are now in the 50's range, which still sucks...
