Cpu Cooler Help?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. I just wanna ask a quick question.

I have a GIGABYTE 3D Rocket II CPU Cooler which is rated at 150W TDP. I was thinking about Cooler Master V8 which is rated at 180W. Is it worth to make the upgrade? Will it perform a lot better? What are your toughts, should I buy it or should I just keep my current cooler?

The Corsair H50 performance is on a par with some of the higher end heat pipe based coolers but is probably bettered by the likes of the Noctua NH-D14. The NH-D14 is a monster so if space is a problem then the H50 could be right for you.

You don't give any indication of whether you are overclocking or what your idle and load temperatures are like so it's difficult to offer any useful advice.

Well I posted everything but the post is gone. I don't know why.

I am overclocking;

Temperatures were:

3.2GHz - 23C Idle, 40C Load

4.0GHz - 25C Idle, 48C Load

4.6GHz - 28C Idle, 62C Load

Temperatures are now:

3.2GHz - 35C Idle, 52C Load

4.0GHz - 38C Idle, 58C Load

4.6GHz - Haven't tried, afraid

=====================

I don't know why suddenly all my temps went up.

I have cleaned all the system from dust (regular maintenance) and when I turned the PC on the temps were high.

I have re-seated the cooler and re-applied the thermal grease which is Arctic Silver 5 and then I tought maybe I did something wrong so I re-seated the CPU and re-applied AS5 again and the temps were the same.

I have not changed anything in the system, all fans are there, everything is the same.

System temp used to be 36C max, now it's 39C

HDD temp used to be 32C max, not it's 35C

GPU temp however is the same :)

The H50 is a low end water cooler and will be surpassed by a high end air cooler . I am upgrading my V8 to a H50 because my country doesnt stock the best air cooler . If you are on a budget then the V8 is the way to go. Mine keeps my q8300 at 3.2ghz cool at 38 degrees full load. The H50 is more expensive but its worth it . High end air like a prolimatech megahalems or noctua run cooler but are even more expensive.

@ My_Inner_Fred: No, everything is the same. I have inspected everything in my case and it's surroundings and everything is the same.

@ Nyt Ryda: Yes, I understand that factory closed-loop water coolers will never be half as good as a nice custom water cooling but H50 will beat the V8 right? And if I don't succeed buying the H50 I should buy the V8 right?

@everyone: Now I remembered that when I took the cooler off I cleaned it and noticed two scratches on the copper plate. So I tought I should lap the surface again (because it was lapped before and there was a small but welcomed improvement) and I took my 2500 sandpaper and slided the cooler 3 times in each direction (dry sandpaper, without water, when I lapped the HS I had a little water on the sandpaper). And the cleanness of the reflection was disturbed but I tought that it won't make a difference at all. Maybe that's why now it runs hotter :| I'll re-lap the plate tomorrow to make it super shiny again. I could see my face if I looked directly at the copper plate, and after I dry-sanded it I couldn't see my face directly but I could see clear at an angle.

P.S. Why people seem to say that V8 is a bad cooler? Someone said that it's a $50 cooler but it performs like a $30 cooler. I don't think V8 is that bad. It's a nice Mid-class cooler I would say.

I have a V8 so I speak from experience , its a very good cooler but cant handle an i7 overclocked at 4ghz thats why im upgrading . On anything lower than i7 it will keep the cpu very cool.

Thanks to everyone for the answers! You people at OCC have been very helpful, so thank you.

@ Nyt Ryda: Thank you too. I'll try to get the H50 and if I can't then I'll go with V8. Thanks for sharing your experience with the V8.
