Q9300 OC to 3.0 help

Hey all, I read the stickied OC'n a quad core thread up there and I was poking around in my BIOS after I DL'd all the monitoring software. I looked under timings and voltages cause near as I can tell all I need to do is set my multiplier from 7.5 to 9, but I couldn't find where that option was located. I'm sure I"ll be able to find if as I check EVGA forums and other stuff, but is that all I reall need to do is change the multiplier? It's getting late, I'll reread the n00b guide again tomroow. Thanks in advance for any help.

I think my multiplier is locked at 7.5, which then leads me to thinking I need to change fsb from 1333 to 1600? I need to step away from the box wine and restart this in the morning. It's a bit confusing.

 

 

You are on the right track - your multiplier is locked (upwards), so your only option is to change the FSB, which will in turn raise your RAM frequency as well.

 

The box wine is working fine ;)

I oc'ed my Q9300 to 3.0ghz as well. All you need to do is up the 'CPU Frequency' setting (the naming maybe a little different from BIOS to BIOS) from the default of 333 to 400. On my system I needed to up the voltage a tiny bit to get it to be Prime95 stable.

 

Check the mem clock multiplier too and make sure your ram can handle that speed.

Overclocking a Q9300 is relatively simple. I don't think you have to do much to OC it to 3,0 GHz, just raise the FSB to 400 MHz. Depending on the board, you might want to bump the voltage a bit. I think you could easily go further, I've been running 3,42 GHz (457 MHz FSB) 24/7 for over a year now and I'm doing fine.

Thx for the tips guys! I just picked up an Antec 902 so I'm gonna do a case migration tonight or tomorrow, then push the FSB up to 400! My ram is running at 1066 5-7-7-20 @ 2.1, and I swear when I called EVGA to ask them how to get my RAM to run that speed, they had me set it to 5-5-5-15 2.1 which is what the packaging said. I know I never changed it so that seemed a little odd to me when I looked at it last night. Anyhow, I'm gonna fill up a glass of box wine and start the case change!

Are running stable and running to hot 2 different things? I set my fsb to 400 and it posted so I ran p95 last night. I seemed to be working fine for the first 30 min or so but my temps were hovering around 70 under load and 50 idle. (still using my old small CM elite 335 case) So I took the side off and it went down a couplel of degrees and I let it run overnight. I crap you not I had dreams of melting processors last night. Anyway This morning p95 wasn't running, or even open anymore, nor was coretemp. Here's the logs they reported.. Also my stress.txt file in p95 doesn't have any furthur info. I'm hoping it's just a temp thing and my new case will help that. I guess I should reseat my HSF too?

And back to my memory , does the SPD tab in CPUz report the actual memory settings, or the factory settings? I ask cause like I mentioned earlier my BIOS seems to report 5-7-7-20 and CPU-z has 3 different timings on the Timings Table. I'll keep researching, but any hints help alot

I actually thought 1.34 was kinda high. I think I'm gonna back the FSB down to stock and go up from there. I think the part that is confusing me the most is how changing my fsb affects my RAM timings.

Changing the FSB will change the RAM speed, & not the timings. The 3 SPD entries in CPUZ are defaults for a given speed, when the MoBo is set to auto.

 

If you have not already, you should be setting your ram timings/speed/voltage manually. If you are shooting at 400 FSB, use a 1:1 ratio, which will put the RAM at 800MHz, which will still give you plenty of headroom if you wish to go higher.

 

You may also need to research secondary RAM timings for your particular modules.
