Lapping observation

Recommended Posts

I was re-adding my thermal paste and noticed something.

I have lapped both my cpu and hs and the gap between them is large.

I would like to get the opinion of others that have done this .

Have any of you looked at this? Each of these has a designed height and I've made both of them thinner.

I must have deleted most of my commit when I did the edit

Corrected, sorry :thumbs-up:

Where is the gap located at? Is it on one or more of the corners? Is it along the edge.

Please be more specific on where, and how the gap appears.

Just a general statement. When each of these are new they have a height, when you

start sanding them down they get thinner. The hs has mounting brackets to attach

it to the cpu. After sanding the hs will not raise as far as it was designed above those brackets.

Then on the other side by sanding the cpu it get's further away creating a gap between the two.

This was some that occurred to me Yesterday as I was re-applying the thermal paste to my hs.

It was just a thought.

This is a good thought, but when you think about it - lapping probably only takes anywhere between 5 and 10 thousandths of an inch off of the surface - which isn't very much. I would say nothing to worry about :D

most heatsinks are screwed down until they make contact anyway, so even if you removed the IHS altogether you'd still be able to make contact with the core by tightening the bolts more than usual.

with a heatsink using push pins though i imagine anything you take off would decrease mounting pressure slightly.
