Jordan Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Currently I have: Athlon XP @ 1.24 GHz 1gb DDR 200 Radeon X800 AGP Rosewill 500W power suply 80gig HD @ 7200RPM (maxtor I belive) M-Audio Delta 44 I'll be using it for mainly audio work in reaper using prob 4-5 instaces of VI.One (VST sampler). Also I'd like to play game decently like CS:S @ highest settings would be nice as now I'm barely making it at 1024x768 no AA or Anisotropic. Here's my plan, Upgrade the CPU, Motherboard, Memory, and GPU to: AMD Phenom 9850 2.5GHz Foxconn Motherboard (combo deal with the processor) - or this mobo also foxconn but about $30 more, also a combo with the previous processor 4gig Patriot Memory Either of these GPU's http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814102770 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814150316
Fight Game Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 they have the 4870 at newegg right now for 145 after mir. do you plan on using the same hard drive and power supply?
Jordan Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 oh nice ill check that out yes I was planning on it unless you think I need to upgrade them, obviously I'm going for a balanced mid range system so I don't want anything being bottle-necked. IVIYTH0S Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 I'd drop a phenom II into that, they have some in that price range and they'd make a fool outta that phenom I . 4830s are about as expensive as 9800gt and can overclock to pretty much mirror a 4850s performance I wouldn't recommend getting a 4870 for that resolution. Just a 4830/9800gt (whichever you find cheaper) would be the best for your dollar and resolution. If you choose a 4870 and not a phenom two I might have to hit ya with a hammer
Jordan Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 okay cool so a phenom II triple would still beat a phenom I quad? Also do you all think my HD and Power Supply are any problem?
IVIYTH0S Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 okay cool so a phenom II triple would still beat a phenom I quad? Also do you all think my HD and Power Supply are any problem? in any core dependent app the quad would win but the triple cores are very strong too. what do you mean your HD? As for PSU's I'd say PC Power and Cooling and Corsair are the best ones out there, Enermax aren't too bad either but 500-550 watts should be sufficient
Jordan Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 okay well i've done some more research and I think I'm going to downgrade some things. Not going with phenom II as thats strictly AM3 which needs DDR3 and I can't lay down that much money. I can get a faster Dual core for the same price as a slower Quad core. After looking at charts the extra cores won't pay of in my gaming and as far as my audio work I think dual core should be sufficient. So I'm thinking an AMD Athlon 64 X2 @ 2.6 and clocking it to
BionicSniper Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 the phenom II can be used in an am2+ mobo with ddr2 ram. I just picked up a phenom 2 710 with a gigabyte am2+ mobo and 4gb of ddr2 ram for 285$ (heres the mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...82E16813128379)
Jordan Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 i did some more reading and this is what i came up with lol http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814150316 - 9800 GT http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819103300 - Athlon 62 X2 Kuma 7750 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820220334 - 4gig 1066 (patriot) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813138117 - Biostar TForce (had good luck with biostar in the past) I plan on overclocking the cpu at least maybe the gfx card (I know IVIYTH0S recommended this card for over clocking). Though DDR2 is just so cheap and awesome to ever consider that Edited February 22, 2009 by IVIYTH0S

(it dropped down to 90 dollars for the Sapphire one) also a phenom II system could serve your needs as well, a nice 790FX board and a phenom triple core would be amazing for how cheap they are. SEE!!
