Adasen Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Hiya folks. I'm new to these forums and also to PC building. For the last few days I've been scrapping through the net finding out all I can about certain mobo's and what's good whats not about them. Problem is, I'm now stuck I've just got hold of a E8600 and I'm looking for a mobo to run it. I've been looking at the Asus rampage formula or the DFI DK X48 T2RS. What would you guys suggest? as one is cheaper than the other. The full build will hopefully look a little like this - E8600 Asus Rampage/DFI DK X48 T2RS 4G DDR2 OCZ Reaper (pc2-6400 800mhz) <--- would this be any good?? Radeon 4870x2 (one card) Seagate sata 250gb Seagate sata 160gb Corsair CMPSU-750TX 750W Also would it be possible with either of those mobo's to OC the E8600 to around 3.8ghz, 24/7 stable? Thanks for any replies guys
Rehit Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 using 1066 ram would give you some overhead for your overclock. i have had my E8600 to 5GHZ on air with 1066 Corsair Dominator ram.
kingdingeling Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Yea, I would grab 1066 RAM. The OCZ ReaperX 1066 are good Also, I would go for the the DFI mobo, they simply are the best overclocking boards. Other than that, I only question the choice of the two harddrives. Do you already have one of them or are you gonna buy both of them new? If so, I'd grab two 80 or two 160GBs, run those in RAID-0 and then get a 250 or 500GB HDD and use that as storage (if you need that much space, I know I don't. I barely use 100GB of my 160GB HDD)
troy5061 Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 (edited) If your only going to run one 4870X2 then I would save some money and get a P45. The Biostar T Power I45 is the cats a$$ for overclocking, especially on a dual like the E8600. The Asus P5Q Pro is also very good. They can run two 4870X2s if you decide to go that way but they will be bottlenecked by the 8x 8x mode. If you definetly plan on going with two GPUs then get either of the X48s you mentioned, they are both great boards. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813138118 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813131299 Btw. That E8600 should do 3.8ghz in its sleep. You shouldnt even need to change the voltage. With good supporting hardware you should be able to get between 4.5-5.0ghz without to much trouble and a good aftermarket air cooler. If you are only looking for 3.8-4ghz you should save $100and go with the E8400 E0. My old E8400 C0 did 4ghz easy so the E0 wont have a problem. You should be able to get 4-4.5ghz on the E8400 E0. http://www.tankguys.com/product_info.php?products_id=1828 Edited October 16, 2008 by troy5061

Might provide a glimpse of what you can expect if you choose that board. http://forums.overclockersclub.com/index.p...=156872&hl=
