My stable system has been locking up during intense CPU usage, mostly when i'm not there. i.e. F@H, Prime95-Multicore, Orthos etc... Its only on full usage, as I can leave it idle all day and be fine. Try and load it, its done within the hour. By locking up I mean unresponsive, anything other than a restart will not bring back video signal. I have no logs from the event viewer, webtemp quits responding so I cant tell what temps are, although everything before that point is withing normal ranges. I did a little case modding yesterday - cut out the center portion of my motherboard tray to provide CPU/NB bolt-thru cooling access w/o removing the mobo, and in the process cleaned and reapplied AS5 on all chipsets, as well as replacing the stock cooler with an HR-05. None of which helped, so I'm pretty sure its not heat related. Although one would think so since the ambient temps have risen several degrees lately. No other system changes have been made before this started occurring, pretty much out of the blue. I've raised CPU Vcore a bit and am going to do further testing, but wanted to get some input... Branjo Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Just a guess but give OCCT a 1 hour run and see how your voltage graphs look. Maybe give a few security apps a go like a different AV, spy ware or trojan scanners. Have you tested it with all overclocks disabled too? Jachyra007 Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 I'll try the OOCT, haven't used that in quite a while. I've dropped it from 438 down to 400 - 3.2Ghz and am starting the 2nd hour of Orthos. Temps might be the issue, as Everest is reporting 56degC for each core, and 48degC overall. Chipset is holding at 46degC, which dropped several degrees with the new cooler. If this is fine, I'm going to start stepping up back up to 3.5 with re-checks inbetween. OCCT graphs have +12v avg. 12.075v, +5v avg. 4.86, +3.3v avg. 3.15, both cores avg. 54.5degC, Vcore avg. 1.407v (set at 1.41v) dropping to 1.39 at the lowest. EllisD Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Isnt that 12v reading out of spec? Have you ever checked your voltages via a DMM? If they arent out of spec at least it will give you the peace of mind knowing as opposed to relying on software. And yea, when the summertime rolls around, it reaks havoc on stable oc's if they are near the temp limit like it looks like you may have been. Jachyra007 Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 oops - meant to say 12.075v. 12.75 would definitely be an issue!! 3.3 is a little low, but its been stable with most of the stress testing programs at 3.2Ghz. I'll step it up later and see how it does. Only ways to compensate for that temp increase would be: 1) use a triple instead of a double radiator? 2) lower the OC 3) burn up more coal by cranking the AC 4) anything else? 1 - I'd just have to figure out where to put that beast, it'd get pretty creative over here...It would give me something to do however. 2 - easiest, but can I avoid it...? 3 - Apt. stabilizes around 74decF without any AC, which raises system temps to unstable levels. I'd be running AC a lot to keep it down around 70. With hotter weather on the horizon, it might be a combination of all three. Jachyra007 Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 That might work out on BC where the ambient temps are what, 50F in the summer? Here it gets around 85F+ with lots of humidity. So anything outgoing would be negated by what gets to come in. I've had a fan blowing out/into the room from the living room, and thats been of marginal help before.
