Darkorb Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 would i see a big difference (worth the $90 ) of swapping to a Sata II HD? i only play games I have a ST3250823AS i wanted to get a http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=Sh...&cid=HD.443.877 320gb Seagate
jelly Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 Unless you need the added drive space I would not swap them out. You will see more of a speed up going from 8mb of cache to 16mb then going from SATA I to SATA II. Thats just my to cents worth. Darkorb Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 well, getting a new 16mb cache HD would be Sata II anyways.
jelly Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 That is a nice drive, I had one and liked it. It would get a little warm, so try to keep a fan on it.
Darkorb Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 i got 2 92mm intakes, and the hd sits right behind it, so heat isnt an issue
Branjo Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 I think it realy hurts a rig to run everything from one hard drive. I run no less than 3 at any time, even an IDE drive will help here. Get the OS,Pagefile and game/program onto their own disk and you will see an improvement. So if i were you I would go for 2 x 80Gb drives instead then you could even raid 0 them. You could probably pick up 2 x 80's for the same price or even 2 x 160's for a few bucks extra.
alexfort93 Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 I honestly just bought a 80GB 7200.10 and I don't really see an improvement. Windows still takes six bars-worth to load lol.
Darkorb Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 i dunno, i dont wana mess around with raid. currently, i have 2 HD's, Seagate 250gb sata i, wd 80gb sata ii i bought the WD for a server thats going to be built. so i was wondering.. should i install my OS onto the WD 80gb? and use the 250gb for the server and have another 250gb SATA ii as my game/music drive? or everything onto a 320gb, and keep my 250gb for backup/use for server, 80gb for backup/use for server? Branjo Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 Yeah I would put the OS on the 80Gb, that way (worst case senario) you get a nasty virus or the drive becomes corrupted and you have to wipe it, you wont lose any of your stored files. Darkorb Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 should i install my games onto that drive aswell? but lets say i do get a virus, and doo reformat, but all my stuff is on the new HD, would i still have to re-install all the games? since it installs into the OS? Thasp Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 IDE and sata are the same . I've yet to see a drive read or write over 100 MBps in any benchmark I do The cables are nicer.. but that's it. The drive itself may be faster, but that has absolutely nothing to do with the interface, but rather, the making of the drive. alexfort93 Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 well that is if you install the games on the same drive as the OS. That's what I am currently doing. I have all my games and OS on 80GB, keep data on 400GB.
