I am about to start building my first computer and I am wanting it mainly for FPS gaming, music, dvd burning and photoshopping. With alot of help from my friends at DSLreports, I came up with an AMD and an Intel system. Tell me what ya think and what are the OC possibilities. Budget is around 600 but I may be able to go a little higher.

If you're building a new system...it's silly to even consider AMD at this point, IMO. For the price/performance, Intel beats AMD hands down. This may change in a year or so but for the time being Intel is king.

If your buying a new gaming system then drop that expensive motherboard. Go with the Gigabyte DS3. It's cheap, overclocks good and a lot of people here have that board so you will have a fountain of information. I'm actually running the e6420 and they are hitting pretty good clocks right now so I wuold say go for it. I can hit 3GHZ on air on stock volts.

I think you are going to like that Intel (revised) setup. Remember that with any motherboard you may experience quirks and hickups while setting it up. One nice thing about the GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 is the enormous user base. You will not lack for resource and information.

I see you dropped a video card altogether. Did you find some way to use a braille system? :)

Here's another opinion statement.

AMD processors are still a great buy considering the price point. For the same relative performance you can get an AMD X2 processor for less than the cost of an Intel Core2Duo.

Now pay special attention to the word relative. There are some benchmarks where the lead changes between them. I have both Intel and AMD based rigs and unless you have a specific reason to go with an Intel processor, the AMD is

This AMD processor is a better choice going against the C2D in your Intel spec.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor 3.0GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache

Everyone knows that Intel has tightened up their bins on the recent processor releases. This means you're not getting the outrageous overclocks on the new silicon that we have gotten on the early batches. DO NOT expect to OC the crap out of these new Intel processors. I've seen successful Intel OC rates drop to less than 5% over the last month or so while AMD results are still in the 12% to 18% range.

According to my benchmarks and others that I've seen posted, even at stock speeds you'll save a few bucks and may not lose any points in FPS games or encoding times.

Just my opinion.

@ExRoadie 10,000 Posts? You're a friggin machine.

@333 For the budget you're looking at I'd go with the AMD option and the processor Ex found and invest the extra money into the other parts.

What motherboard, are you suggesting 333 use the BIOSTAR TFORCE 550?
