RAID-0 with 2 disks=problem

Recommended Posts

Hi:)

I'm about to set up a RAID-0, with a WD Raptor 35gb and a WD Raptor 74GB.

I followed the guide by Angrygames, and everything seemed to be going smooth: I made sure that everything was set to enabled in the BIOS, created a RAID array (stripping, 4k) with both of my HDD's ( that's healthy ). installed the NVRaid drivers from the disk and followed the instructions when Windows installation boots up (F6, press S....etc.)

But when i get to the part where I've to choose which partition Windows is to be installed on, the RAID-array that i can choose, only contains 70000mb@70gb; but 70gb would mean that it's only ONE of my HDD's that is being "taken into account".

I'm quite new to´the RAID-thing, so I've im pretty lost, right now...

No, acctually its correct, RAID 0 Takes the SMALLEST HDD, and multiplies it.

Sorry, thats how it works...

meaning, it took 35gb, and another 35gb out of the 70... 35X2 = 70... exactly wewhat you got...

thats why usually you only raid with the same HDDS..

Hi

Hmm, that's wierd; especially that it isnt mentioned in any of the guides I've read.

Maybe it's so esoteric, that they "forgot" to mention it.

So I loose like 70bg on RAID? it "forgets" the last disk?

Hmm that was quite a puch to the stomach...Well does the added diskperformance add up for the loss?

No it doesn't and you will only loose 35GB if you Raid with those drives. Those disks are fast enough you don't really need Raid.

Are you sure? I've just heard alot of people saying that RAID 0 really influences game stutter, in a good way..

Some like it and some don't because of the chance if one drive goes down you loose all your data. I use it and like it, but you'd loose 35GB and that isn't good. If you really want to run Raid just buy another 35 or 74GB Raptor and then set it up.

Look, if you got 2 raptors, it can "own" to put them in raid, just dont put anything that is important there...

if i were you, i would put the the 35 gb raptor as an OS drive

and the 70 as a GAME drive, were you install everything, leave raid out...

you'll gain a lot more with this config.

Seeing how you have 2 different drive sizes, I'll agree and say use the smaller for an OS drive and the larger for a applications / game drive. The performance from going to raid with raptors isn't that amazingly much better, it is better but not worth the lost disk space. I've run my raptors in both raid and jbod modes (jbod just adds the drives together but not in a raid 0 way) and the performance different wasn't anything amazing.

The performance of having the two drive setup might actually be greater than the raid0 array as you then have the swap file completely seperated... Hmmmm... I may setup my hdd's differently when I get my mobo...

Raid arrays are generally done with the exact same hdd as well when you start using different sizes and such, you found out what happens.

The set up I have 2-WD 80gb Raid 0 are entirely for gameing I have a OS installed on it with just stuff like drivers and firefox and . of that nature but I have been runnin raid 0 for years never had any game stutter evr period!!! Actualy I am always 98% of the time the first person on the map! But if you want raid 0.... I would suggest just like SLI you run 2 of the same identical disks! For the price of hard drives these days why complicate things? I got my Raid 0 set up for like $84.00 and like I said 98% of the time I am always on the map first!!!!!
