ir_cow Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 most will say socket 939 is the way to go, but if your short on money 754 works well i think. AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 512KB L2 Cache, Socket 939 64-bit Processor - Retail $155 1.8ghz http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-103-501&depa=1 GIGABYTE "GA-K8NS Ultra-939" NVIDIA nForce3 ULTRA Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket 939 CPU -RETAIL $110.00 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-128-263&depa=1 or MSI "K8N Neo2 Platinum" NVIDIA nForce3 ULTRA Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket 939 CPU -RETAIL $143.00 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-130-468&depa=1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AMD Athlon 64 2800+, 512KB L2 Cache, 64-bit Processor - Retail $120 1.8ghz http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-103-452&depa=1 GIGABYTE "GA-K8NS PRO" nForce3 250 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 754 CPU -RETAIL $89.00 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-128-241&depa=1 OR MSI "K8N Neo-FSR" NVIDIA nForce3 250GB Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket 754 CPU -RETAIL $82.00 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-130-470&depa=1 ------------------------- Both Motherboards are good and both have locks with Sata + Both CPus can hit 2.4ghz easy as the top model for that core is 2.4ghz so stock cooler is all you need. but they choice is yours Socket 754 or 939, i say 753 just b/c its cheaper and by the time your upgrade there going to be a new socket anyways. other boards are good too, but Nforce chipsets always have locks, other like VIA do not. so watch what your buy. ir_cow Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 (edited) yeah the board should be fine, but i do not know the ocing it can do, nfor ce chipssets have the ablity to oc but its more in the motherboard letting you have the right settings, ask someone about that board as i only know about MSI and Gigabyte ones remeber thats a 939Socket, dont get them confused as they look the same with the same chipsets. Nerm Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 That board is decent. It isn't a monster OCer like the DFI or MSI boards but it will work if your on a tight budget. I think that is the board markie has if so he is probably the one to talk to as I know he has been doing a lot of playing with this lately lol
r_target Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 what do you think of this EPoX mobo? that looks like what i'm looking for (cheap too ) 433342 That's the one I went with. Works like a champ right out of the box. My CPU gives up long before this board will. I dropped the multiplier and booted it at 335 HTT just for kicks. It doesn't have uber L337 day-glo UV reflective colors though. Also, the motherboard layout is kind of weird. EDIT: Ah, Nerm.....but it is a monster OC'er. r_target Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 I would avoid the Ultra X-Connect. Some folks have them and haven't reported any problems, but reviews don't show them in a favorable light.
E Fudd Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 I would avoid the Ultra X-Connect. Some folks have them and haven't reported any problems, but reviews don't show them in a favorable light. 433868 For what is worth have had a Ultra 500w for a few months - switched to a 500w Mad Dog 24 pin (had to) - and I don't seem to have to have the surge (slight pull down) when starting something that I got with the Ultra - but ya got to admit the ultra is pretty
climberdude Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 so you think the ultra will do OK?
