System keeps randomly freezing

Recommended Posts

My computer has been randomly freezing at different points during startup and in windows...I think its motherboard but I want your guys input...when it freezes the reset button on my tower or on the mobo directly does not work. After hitting the reset it simply powers off fully after a few seconds.  Sometimes it won't even post or even freezes at the vid card flash screen.  Sometimes if it does it freezes before even getting into windows or at windows startup screen.  I've never really had a cpu itself die so was wondering if it could be that as well.  I tested the SSD using hdtune and no errors were found with that.  No errors came back on memory either.  I've hated this mobo since day one but before I go and buy a new one was wondering what are signs of a cpu itself dieing?  I would think if it was anything else the reset button's would still work on the mobo and that's why I am really thinking its the mobo.

Odd thing is like right now it took me at least 10 restarts of freezing in various spots but I have now been using it at least 10 minutes with no freezing...really frustrating. Any ideas or input would be appreciated.

I've seen this happen before and a lot of the time it's the psu on it's way out, if you have a multy meter it would not hurt to check the voltages it's putting out, also did you reset the cmos to default to check that, and lastly windows boot files could be corrupt. I'd check all of these before I'd blame the mb or cpu.

Damn...well if that's the case here is another question if I have to change that...I plan on eventually getting another gtx 970...currently I have a corsair hx750 power supply...would a 750 watt power supply suffice or should I get a 850 watt?  Also no multimeter available to check.

It appears you have another PSU and another Video card you can swap out on HERS computer. If I understand what MB and CPU you have you can try running on your CPU/MB video to rule out the video card. It's easier than replacing the mb.

System is not overclocked and currently using Asrock Extreme 4...one big issue i've always had with this mobo is that I could never get the dual channel to work...I am currently running both sticks in single channel mode and they won't run at rated speed of 2400mhz but its not losing a lot either at 2200mhz also not noticeable either just principle imo...its also not just these sicks...tried the ones from gf's comp and they wouldn't work as well...if I do a mobo swap which I just might still...looking at a asus sabertooth z77...as far as the psu goes its still under warranty....according to newegg it shows a 7 year warranty...its not even 3 years old...going to hardware store tommorow for a multimeter to test...just going to suck not having a pc for a week or 2 while I send it to corsair

So upon doing the power supply test I found nothing wrong with the power supply...I used a paper clip to jump pins 15 and 16 then used pin 24 as the ground and tested each other pin.  None were jumping around and all were within spec...believe all the 3.3's came up as 3.34..5's came up at around 5.08 and the 12's were in around 12.44 and for pin 14 it was -12.44...so I am back to pointing at the mobo...am going to use my gf's computer right now to test the vid card and ram

edit: after doing a lot of testing I have come to the conclusion that it is the mobo...I tested everything in my girlfriends comp....even went to the extent of hooking up my power supply just by putting both towers next to each other and running the power supply wires from my box to her mobo, vid card, and ssd and her system ran just fine...unfortunately at this point I can't even get my system to post anymore...it gets stuck at random points in the post every time now...really only thing I didn't test was the cpu and I just don't see that being the issue
