CrossFire and SLI

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I have just bought an Inno3D GeForce 8600 GTS (I appreciate it is an old card, but this will be made clear as I go on). I am also planning to buy a higher-spec AMD card in the future. I was wondering if I could use a CrossFire bridge on the SLI port on the 8600 to improve the PhysX performance of the system.

Is this possible and what would I need to get it to work? I have no knowledge of CrossFire or SLI, so sorry if this is a stupid question.

Cheers,

EuroFight

Unfortunately no, you cannot crossfire or sli between card manufacturers, between series (eg a 580 and a 480) or between models (580 and 570)

If you get a Higher spec Nvidia card, you can use your 8600GTS for PhysX, you will not need to use the SLI bridge, however, a 8600 GTS will not be of any benificial performance when used for PhysX, in fact, it will probably slow down the system

Ah well, thats unfortunate :(

Thank you for your help though, I was planning to stretch my budget to a 7770, and I believe nVidia cards are generally more expensive?

It simply depends.

In the video card market, you generally get what you pay for from a performance standpoint. The faster cards are more expensive, and the more expensive cards are usually faster (TJJ_Angel or someone will nitpick my argument here with some odd examples) but generally that is how it works.

For low-medium end cards in the budget range of a 7770, the 7770 is probably the best card, however if you can stretch your budget to a Nvidia 560 it will be much faster for not much more money.

Ummm, you can CF and SLI different models. A 580 can SLI with a 570 and a 6950 will CF with a 6970.

The higher card just down tunes it self to be like the lesser card

Also you can CF and SLI with different manufacturers, I had a EVGA and BFG 8800GT SLI in my system for while.

Check your facts.

No check YOUR facts... AMD allows certain different models to be in CF together like a 5850/5870 or 6950/6970 or 7950/7970 but this is absolutely NOT true for Nvidia. You cannot SLI a 570 with a 580 nor a 670 with a 680... Heck AMD allows a 6990 to cf with a 6970 when Nvidia doesnt even allow it's 590 to SLI with a 580

Different manufacturers like an EVGA 580 with an ASUS 580 are allowed as it is still a 580

Edit : Also, the higher card does not downclock itself to the lesser card. I had my 5970+5870 running at different speeds in CF and with my EVGA SC 580 with a normal EVGA 580 both cards actually ran at the SC card's clocks

Although it would be a waste to CF a high card(ie 6970) with a low card(ie 6950) anyway. So there is not really any point.

Depends on what you think is a "waste"...

Is that your best excuse other than admiting you were misinformed and wrong ?

Yup and that I was right except for the Nvidia thing.

And just for the OP, using an Nvidia card for PhysX with an AMD card used to be possible with hacked/modded drivers but it is really too much effort to even consider it now-a-days
