Ticking hard drive

I was sitting at my computer when all of a sudden my Seagate Barracuda My link started making loud ticking noises like something was trying to move inside but couldn't. I immediately shut down the computer and restated only to find the hard drive wasn't being recognized. I tried switching the SATA port just to rule out that being the problem (it wasn't it). I don't have much experience dealing with the inside of hard drives so I was wondering if someone could give me some tips or maybe some fixes I could try. I don't want to take it to best buy and have them fix it because I'm thinking the price of them fixing it may cost more or the same as a new one. If anyone has taken one of their broken hard drives to a computer store to be fixed I would also love to know how much it cost to have them fix it. :)

That ticking noise... It means the hard drive is dead, like hardcore dead. Ive never heard of a drive that after making that metal tinking noise that ever started working again except by sending the drive in to a special place that can pull the platter out and recover the data. Its extreme expensive and doesn't fix the drive, just a way to get the data back, and it typically costs $100's of dollars per drive.

JUST to be totally sure, try a different power cable, its possible the drive just isnt getting enough power. It's probably not going to fix it, But you never know!

Basically your drive is dead, hope you had backups and its time to buy a new one!

Alright, thanks for your response, very helpful. That sure does stink though, only lasted about 5 months. I think the warranty covers it though so not too bad.
Yeah no problem! You should be covered by the warranty, so RMA that bad boy. If you complain they might even ship you a new drive, then allow you to just return the bad drive in the container they sent the new drive in, takes only a day or 2 in shipping. Otherwise your stuck sending the drive in, Them telling you its actually broken(Dur!) and then offering a replacement, Can take upwards of 3 weeks!!

So instead of sending it to them and waiting 3 weeks for them to tell me what I already know, send them an email and complain about the drive failing in only 5 months and threaten to take my business elsewhere and give bad reviews on sites that sell this hard drive?

Those places are nuts, I think one of my friends got a quote for $1200 or $1700 to recover the data on one of his 2.5" drives that died. And before you start threatening them for no reason, try calling and just talking to the representative first. No need to burn bridges before you have to. Slowly escalate your unhappy customer-ness.

I really doubt they will take me seriously on the phone (I'm fifteen) :P , and I couldn't really get into an argument with one of their representatives because I respect people that are older than I am.

Ace,

Just call the customer service desk, explain your problem and request an RMA. Inquire about cross-shipping.

They don't know your fifteen. Just present yourself in a mature and professional manner and I'm sure they will respond in kind.

I just ordered a crucial m4 64g ssd from newegg so I will just go through the standard return process. I have been wanting an ssd for a long time and had some extra cash so why not? Thanks for everyone's help on this, I really appreciate it.
