Im just wondering ........ these prices aside, cause I would shop around anyway !!!!!

which HDD would perform the best, more than likely it would to be used in a HDD enclosure for storage !

I do not seem to find a ...... ATA133 with 16MB Cache, something around the 500G range !

What would you rather have ..... 16mb cache or ATA 133 vs ATA 100 ?

What are your thoughts ?

Keep in mind .... that I am aware that SATA would be the better choice !

Thanks

If you are just using it for storage and these files wouldn't be accessed much then it really doesn't matter. I have yet to see any difference in speed between ATA100 & 133 so I would just shoot for cache.

Would you're external storage be mainly read from or written to? What size files are you talking about, how often. If you have no specific needs apart from it being a file dump then anything will do.

yep, in an external storage, it doesn't really matter.

grab a drive that has at least 8MB cache and 7200RPM and be on your way (look for drive specials at newegg, they almost always have the cheapest drives)

I personally use a Maxtor 160GB 8MB cache 7200RPM IDE U133 drive in my USB2.0/Firewire enclosure.

I used to feel the same way about Maxtor (bad).

But actually almost all of the Maxtor brand HDDs are now simply rebadged Seagates with a three year warranty instead of 5 years.

Fry's has an awesome deal on a Maxtor 300GB retail at $59.95

It's a rebadged 7200.10 (perpendicular recording).

Notice the BONUS FREE 20GB in the FRY's AD. ie 320GB Seagate

Now my opinion of Maxtor is fairly low - the last two to fail on me were Maxtor's. This could be the exception to the rule, or not.

I've got about 8 of them sitting around that get used regularly as clone/backup/image/external drives. I've had a few fail, but I've had a few of every single drive fail (Seagate, WD, Maxtor, Hitachi, Samsung, Fuji)
