akmirdock Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 I have a 1280MB MSI GTX 570 Twin FrozrII And a friend of mine is getting out of pc gaming and offered to sell me his Sapphire R9 280X Dual card for $310. He said he paid $500 for it, not sure what its really worth.. Is this a worthy upgrade? KillaCam Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 A reference 280x was originally around $300 at release. The whole cryptocurrency stuff has inflated their prices a ton... and these cards are great at crypto-mining. That is why they now go for $400-$500 instead of ~$300. If you compare $310 to the current average [inflated] price of a 280x, that is a good deal. It would be a nice upgrade from your gtx570. However, if your friend got a 280x at release, he did not pay 500 dollars for it.
akmirdock Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 hmm, and he said he got it at release... lol. I was thinking maybe just get a GTX 760 instead. its 250 shipped, brand new, and seems just a tad slower.. thoughts on that?
KillaCam Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 I actually was going to get a gtx 760 before I decided to get a 2560x1440 monitor. GTX 760 is a great card. If you are gaming at 1920x1080 and don't care about maxing out games like crisis/metro, it will suit you well. It would still be a good upgrade from your 570. Not quite as powerful as the 280x, but definitely no slouch. Also, I see you have a Cooler Master 1000w PSU. While I'm not sure why you have a 1kw PSU for a single gtx 570, it would power 2x GTX 760's fine. Just a piece of mind if you decide you need more power down the road. IVIYTH0S Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Either a 760 or the 280x, you would get a performance increase that'd justify the extra $$ for it. It's up to you if you want more performance or more money in your pocket.
WarWeeny Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 In my opinion a gtx 760 is not a great upgrade form a gtx 570. It is only 20%~ faster and i don't think $250 will justify that boost. If you look into the gtx 770 however, that card is pretty much 50%+ faster than the gtx 570. The gtx 770 can be had for around 330 i believe and is well worth the extra cash. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127741 is an example, it is a great card with good clocks as well) In the end if you want my opinion on if you should get that gtx760 or not, it would be no don't get it. Oh and if you can buy that 280X for $310, that would be a good deal. ;P Has roughly the same performance as the gtx 770, so its either choosing to which camp you want to go.
