The Power Switch on Motherboard fell out, is there another way to turn

My first test turned out to be horrible, when I pushed the power switch on the case, the computer didn't turn on, did I insert the LED connector backwards? Also the LED called Power LED connects to the ATX pins for the front panel right?

 

Since that didn't work, I used the power switch on the MOBO and what the hell do you know, the god damn button was lose and after a few seconds the computer turned off but the power supply was still running. Then I pushed the switch again to turn off the power supply and it popped off.

 

I want to know is if my CPU fried when the comp turned off after 20 seconds, and when this happened the power supply kept running but the fan on the heatsink stopped.

 

Also is there a way to turn it on now that the power switch and its components on the mobo popped off. I'm gonna hook up the LEDs and see.

sounds like you're hooking up your case wires incorrectly. there should be wires for Power Switch and Power LED (probably Reset SW and HDD LED too).

 

the case wires for Power Switch should go to the ATX pins.

The LED connection for the front panel has no effect on the power button operation. You should pay attention to the Power Switch lead from the front panel when you connect it to the mobo.

 

If the switch on the mobo is broken, it could be stuck in the "down" position.

 

On an ATX motherboard the power switch is a "momentary" type. This means that making the connection starts the system then the connection is off again.

 

When you press and hold the power button down, This keeps the connection made and causes the system to shut down after several seconds(could be from 5 to 10 seconds depending on the system).

 

It sounds like the power switch is stuck in the down or on position causing the system to at least start. If the system shut down but the power supply was still running, it sounds like you will need to reset the BIOS by clearing CMOS.

 

Give the system another chance to start after you resolve the front panel switch.

Here are more details: I pushed the button again but it's not stuck, the switch, spring and one other little piece just came out.

 

It is still possible to start the computer just by hooking up the LED correctly right?

The front panel LED has nothing to do with the power switch. You must have the front panel power switch hooked up to the motherboard. See the printed manual or the PDF manual for the exact locations and orientation of the pins on the mobo.

Yeah, you are confusingly mixing up the Power LED (sometimes abbreviated PLED) with Power Switch (sometimes abbreviated PWRS or PSW(itch)). To turn on the Power, just make sure your Power Switch cable/wire is plugged-in to the correct head on the mobo. The Power LED will come on if it is hooked up correctly. If not, reverse the polarity (Cathode is positive/red, green or yellow wire in most case) and it should come on (lit). Just make sure you look at the wiring diagram for proper configuration/wiring signal spec.

use a screwdriver to jump the startup pins. people have been doing it on caseless setups for years. be careful not to fry the mobo by touching the wrong things and don't do it if you have any doubts as to which pins to touch.

I have three or four On / off switches that i have saved from old cases and I have electrical tape on them to keep them from getting the wires bent /broken at the switch.

 

If you have one you can salvage, grab it or check with a pc shop and the tech will have one.

 

Check the mobo manual and logic out the on off pins and plug in and turn it on/off and bypass the case's on /off switch.

 

As noted above, anything led is not power but always lights. (well, supposed to be anyway. I have seen bad/wrong labels and so I always use my salvaged switch to jump past the stock case wireing in the beginning.)

 

EDIT : depending on the model, take the front off the case and you should still see a tiny switch (beige) with a black post. unless your whole swich went kabloey, then your case button broke and not the physical switch wired to the system. Alternatively you can reach inside the case and pinch the two prongs holding it and remove it. *( a lot easier with the front off)
