Can my PSU handle it?

As you can see in my sig, I have an X-Connect PSU. I am one of the people who got one with stable rails, however. I had overclocked my 3200+ to 2.5GHz for a short time and everything was fine. The biggest dip in the 12v rail was to 11.96v.

Now that I am getting my TEC cooler any day now, I want to push my FX-55 for the first time. I plan on doing the X-Connect fan mod. I am only running my video card, 2 SATA HDDs, and one optical drive. I have a 120mm front intake fan, and another identical exhaust fan running from motherboard headers. Obviously, my rear fan will be replaced by the Eliminator TEC, and another 4-pin molex will be used.

Do you think this 500W PSU can handle it? I want honest feedback, not just the generic, "X-Connect sucks."

it's a TEC-cooler, the CoolIt Eliminator i think... and iirc it has 3x55W TECs ... so 165 extra watts... i guess it's reasonable... 335W total load now... i mean, my dual core SLI rig uses 402W load... so i don't think it's unreasonable to assume a single core, x850 rig could be using 65 less watts...

i guess try it and see... it's likely to be at the upper end of the load limit of the psu... so it stands a fair chance of working

if you google: psu wattage calculator

it's the 1st result

extreme outervision it should be

but i find it overestimates by a hefty margin... no good if it's actually just under... cos it'll probably say like 650W for you when you only really need 480W or something

but really... what is the point of being so bothered about whether it can handle it or not?

if it can't, buy a better psu, if it can, then don't... it'd be REALLY hard to say for definite whether it'll work or not unless you have a power monitor where you can measure the actual AC wattage being drawn from your rig right now, then convert for DC, and add on the CoolIt power... and is the X-Connect dual rail? would it overload a rail? who knows? but who cares? don't stress or do your head in over it, just be prepared to buy a psu in case it doesn't work i guess...

Exactly. Don't buy another PSU unless you absolutly need to. I hate X-connects, I got one of the bad railed ones. But, if yours is stable then try it.

It is a single 12v rail @30amps.

I guess the reason I am really concerned is because I am not sure how to tell if it is the PSU that is holding me back. I can obviously identify a dead PSU, but don't have any experience troubleshooting a PSU that isn't cutting it.

well, I had that experience chavalcito. I had an Aspire 520W PSU, and was stuck at a measly 2.8 when hardnrg and the guys over in the Opteron/San Diego OC competition were crancking out 3GHz and beyond. So in case of a future upgrade to SLI I picked up a nice 600W Enermax Noisetaker for about 50% of the European retail price at the time (110

Any chance you will be willing to pop it open and get a shot of the insides?

I really want to find out if there are two versions of the xconnect :P Also, can you get a shot of the label for the UL numbeR?

When I open it up to do the fan mod, I'll take pics.
