Mobo And Processor, Good Combo?

Recommended Posts

The MOBO was a spur of the moment decision when I was told my Asus board was fried (brand new). I was anxious to get the machine done, and did not want to wait for it to be replaced.

I am now having doubts as to the choice. The MOBO and Processor are in my sig. Is this a good combo, or should I replace the Asus?

Asus P4P800E MOBO - OR - Intel G865PERL (current)

Thanks for your advice.

Just stay away from the P4P series. They are nothing but trouble.

Wow, I really made unpopular choices in MOBO's. I gotta ask you guys before spending any more money.

FxXP, can you elaborate on the problems with the P4P series? I already have that board, uninstalled, and was thinking of using it as a base of another machine. I got it for next to nothing (now I know why), but I would like to make use of it somehow.

And thanks for the feedback. I actually WAS thining of OC'ing, but I see I made a bad choice in the Intel board. I will check out the ones you have suggested.

As for the intel baords....they are GREAT for stock speed satbility...but OCing is software only (sometimes) and a FSB increase from 200 to 203 is considered "good" on most....

I think that DFI and ABIT would be the way to go for more long term use.

Lets see:

1. Game port interfers with the S-ATA IRQ's. (P4P800SE)

2. Constant dropping in voltages. (Any P4P)

3. Unstable BIOS. (Any P4P)

The Intel 865 boards did have some capacitor problems, I'd double check any Intel board now-a-days to see if they have Rubycon caps.

1. No SATA at the moment, so that is not yet a problem.

2. Not sure how to detect this, so I don't know

3. Can I replace the BIOS with a better one?

The MOBO was dead right out of the box, which is why I replaced it. It was my first attempt to build a machine, and after assembling it, it would constantly reboot. After a week of trying to get it to work, I took it to a shop to be checked out, and it turns out the MOBO AND one of the Corsair chips were bad. Corsair was fast to replace the memory, but the MOBO was another story. I got lazy, and bought the Intel board instead. <sigh> Impatience never leads to a good end.
