Amd 64 Mobile

Recommended Posts

anyone try a 64-mobile yet? You guys think they'll be as superior to regular 64's as the xp mobiles are to regular xp's? Once the new FX cpu's are released, i want to build a new comp, but i don't think they're making any FX mobiles, so i was just wondering what you guys thought....and would those 64 mobiles work in a desktop?

I don't they use the same socket. if amd was smart they'd make em like intel made the P4m... so you can't put it on a desktop board.

I hope I'm wrong though, cuz it might be an intersting experiment to try out.

Why would that be smart? If you think about it, it would actually be stupid because if they did that no one would bye them. Think about it there more expensive than the normal XP's and normal users dont get them, i think AMD does that on purpose. I might be wrong tho.

EDIT:

Read this... notice the "Socket 754" if there were different it would have a different number of pins...unless there arranged differently

# of pins doesn't mean it's gonna work. P3m chips have 478 pins, however they're not interchangable with P4's.

on the amd being smart comment, they make more $$$ per mobile chip. they sell em for laptop only (MOBILE not overclocker is the name here), then they force all laptop makers to buy MOBILE chips instead of get cheap like cbw does on most models and use the desktop chip.

i dunno if they'd say. probably depends on who answers the email.

When's the new FX line supposed to come out? I thought they were due out in the beginning of June, which is now...so can we expect them soon? I wanna know if i'm spending 1k for a new one, or dropping down and getting an fx-53 or 64-mobile (if compatible) instead.

  • 2 weeks later...

Mobile A64s are the same socket 754 as the desktop, trick is finding a mobo with the BIOS to support it. Look at my sig. If I had a board that would do a higher clock 300x9 would be possible I think.

the main problem with the mobile 64 is the memory. It can't handle anything above pc2700 (supposedly). I don't have the money to throw around to just go out and buy 2 sticks of the good stuff and throw it in my laptop (voiding the warrenty) to see if it will open up some bandwith. Regardless of how good the memory/processor is...a notebook computer will always have the hard drive holding it back. Notebook computers are still lacking in the HD department.

There's a reason why they're more expensive. Mobile cpu's have to be more efficient for laptops. AMD would of course expect more money for a chip that will do say, 1853mhz at 1.45v instead of 1.65v. It's not just to force the laptop users to pay more, they're in fact gettin a better product.

Mobiles are DEFINATLY worth the money, if you have a board that will support them. I'm doing 2.25 Ghz with 1.3 volts. My board is the limiting factor here, the cpu could probably hit around 2.7 Ghz.

And there is no problem with it supporting fast memory, I'm useing PC4000 quite well.

EDIT: Screenshots removed, posting new ones.
