Friend With A Dell...

Okay, my friend has a Dell. Has had it for several years. And is an avid gamer. Help me help him.

He wants to get the best GPU on the market when Doom III comes out. I told him that his box would not support the best card on the market when DIII comes out. So then I told him he would need to get a new CPU, to do that he'd need a new motherboard, then new RAM, then the motherboard would need a new case to sit in etc etc etc. So I need to hook him up with a homebrew gamer's box within the next few months that will support the latest and greatest GPU technology when it arrives.

Anyone got any ideas on cheap(er) stuff to support an expensive GPU?

Well, if you want ultimate gaming performance, you'll need to wait about 6 weeks for the nVidia 6800 to hit the streets. Early benchmarks show it to be far superior to even the 9800XT. As for the rest of it, we'll need a budget to configure the best system possible

Well Doom III probably won't be out when the 6800 is out, so it will probably be a next generation 6800 chip or ATI's rebuttal card. As for budget, the only thing he wants to spend a crapload of money on is the GPU, so I would say 700 or 800 dollars give or take a hundred for the other stuff.

If you want to only spend $700-800, it will be pretty hard to get a good gaming system with a top of the line card. The 6800 it's gonna hit shelves with a price tag around $450-$499, so your only gonna have about $200-$300 to spend on the rest. It can be done, but you'll have to skimp on some parts.

I'm not sure I read it right, but it looks like he meant $700-800 on the vid card Nuc :P

If I'm wrong (AGAIN!) tsamb, then I would have to agree with Nuc... A vid card as powerful as the 6800 is gonna need a pretty darn good PSU as well... That's not even talking about mobo, ram, CPU, and accesories (all of which affect gaming performance as well)... A vid card does not make a gaming system alone.... you'll need some good equipment to run it on, I would say a minimum of $1100 if you're considering putting in the 6800...

Well its pretty much useless for us to tell you "the best" gaming system for when Doom III comes out. By that time there will be very different components to what we have now. It all depends when he wants it, if your want to know the best system you can get for that money in 6 months... we honestly cant tell you.

But if he wants it now.... make sure its a P4, if he wants it in the future, make sure its an Intel chip :P

Whoa whoa, sorry guys. To clear things up, I meant he is gonna pay whatever the best GPU costs (that is out of the question) and then we have 700 to 800 bucks to work with to get a gaming system (minus the graphics card). So basically a full rig lacking a GPU for 800ish dollars.

(edit: we are looking for a system to put together right now, or in the near future, but with the upgradability for a nice GPU)
